Default The Jeter Center, In Boston!

Quote:
BOSTON (AP) -- The arena is in downtown Boston, the heart of Red Sox Nation. There couldn't be a bigger insult than to name it after the captain of the hated New York Yankees.

But that's just what Manhattan lawyer Kerry Konrad aims to do next Tuesday after his $2,325 bid won an eBay auction giving him the one-day naming rights to the FleetCenter.

Konrad's proposed name: the Derek Jeter Center, after the Yankee shortstop.

His winning bid threw the FleetCenter brass into a dilemma.

``I told him, 'I don't think we can approve that name,''' arena spokesman Jim Delaney said.

He said he would talk it over Friday with FleetCenter president Richard Krezwick and a decision would be made by the end of the day. Arena officials have reserved the right to approve or reject any winning bid.

The FleetCenter is home to the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins. The name became obsolete after Bank of America acquired FleetBoston Financial last year and the Charlotte, N.C., banking giant opted not to retain the naming rights.

While the arena's owner, Delaware North Cos., searches for a new long-term partner, it has been offering one-day naming rights on eBay and donating the proceeds to charity. Past winners have included an online casino and a California man who named it for his wife as a Valentine's Day present. The names are posted on signs around the arena and on fleetcenter.com

Konrad, a Harvard alum, had the high bid for the March 1 naming rights. His wife, Nina Webb, said it was part of a 20-year college rivalry with some Boston buddies.

Delaney said Konrad has been understanding about their predicament, even suggesting that if his Boston friends match his winning bid, they can all settle on a 24-hour name for the arena.

``That name may not be as bad as A-Rod,'' Delaney said, referring to Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriquez, ``but it's still considered obscene.''

It would look bad to deny this guy his one day of the Derek Jeter Center, but I won't be surprised if they do decline it.

Better Jeter than ARod, though.

One correction I feel compelled to make, though: the Fleet Center is NOT the heart of Red Sox Nation. Forever and always (or at least till they tear the damn thing down), the heart of Red Sox Nation will lay quite oddly-shapedly in the Fens, on Yawkey Way. And, even after they decide to tear the park down, they'll leave the Green Monster standing all 32' tall, with faux banners of titles won and numbers of the surprisingly few retired jerseys hanging...

Well, FleetCenter officials turned down the request:

"We decided that all the names had to be rated G, and this name was determined to be obscene and vulgar," said Richard A. Krezwick, president and chief executive of the FleetCenter, which has auctioned off daily naming rights to about a dozen companies since its contract with the bank was terminated. "We were afraid of the volume of phone calls bogging down our switchboard, the number of e-mails clogging our portal and the potential graffiti on the side of our building."

The guy who placed the bid said he did it as a joke and did not expect that it to get approved in the first place.

I'm not surprised by this, but I actually have a problem with calling Derek Jeter "obscene and vulgar." Of the Yankees, if I had to choose, I'd go with Torre first, and then Jeter, then Rivera. All the others might be obscenities, but those three, at least, strike me as rising above their awful pinstripes...

Well, I hope that statement was made in jest and they were not being serious when they said they determined the name to be obscene and vulgar. I assume they were just saying that as a dig towards Yankees fans.

That is so stupid that it didn't get approved.

It's not like they named it "The Hitler Center" or anything.

It is a baseball player. Give me a break.

I wouldn't really have minded it being called the Jeter Center. From what I hear, he's a pretty classy guy who does a lot of charity work. Now if it'd been A-Rod, that would've been another story.

i second that about jeter being an ok fellow. i think it would have been pretty funny too. that would be part of a friendly rivalry - something which does not exist.
