Tony Gwynn just resigned with the Padres for the 2001 season. In almost every report of this story, a reference was made to Gwynn being "Mr. Padre." This made me ponder - - Ernie Banks has always been known as "Mr. Cub" - but, what about other teams? Who are their "Mr. Whatever"? So, I quickly came up with the suggestions that follow. Any thoughts on these?

Mr. D-Back - Jay Bell
Mr. Brave - Hank Aaron
Mr. Cub - Ernie Banks
Mr. Red - Pete Rose
Mr. Rockie - Dante Bichette
Mr. Marlin - Jeff Conine
Mr. Astro - Craig Biggio
Mr. LA Dodger - Steve Garvey
Mr. Brewer - Robin Yount
Mr. Expo - Andre Dawson
Mr. Met - Tom Seaver
Mr. Phillie - Mike Schimdt
Mr. Pirate - Roberto Clemente
Mr. Cardinal - Stan Musial
Mr. Padre - Tony Gwynn
Mr. Giant - Willie Mays
Mr. Angel - Nolan Ryan
Mr. Oriole - Cal Ripken Jr.
Mr. Red Sox - Carl Yastrzemski
Mr. White Sox - Luke Appling
Mr. Indian - Bob Feller
Mr. Tiger - Al Kaline
Mr. Royal - George Brett
Mr. Twin - Harmon Killebrew
Mr. Yankee - Mickey Mantle
Mr. Oakland Athletic - Rickey Henderson
Mr. Mariner - Edgar Martinez
Mr. D-Ray - Fred McGriff
Mr. Ranger - Ivan Rodriguez
Mr. Blue Jay - Dave Steib

I think you did a good job. Definately got the Mets right. It is hard to decide on the newer teams however as they have not been around as long. I think that Ted Williams could be in their somewhere and I'm not sure about for the Yankees. They have such a long history that includes many great players like Ruth, Dimaggio, and others. Good job.

Thanks - agreed, Williams and Yaz are most likely six of one, half dozen of the other........

Yanks, you could even throw Berra in the mix. I went with Mantle since he's the one that a fan (today) age 15 would still know as well as the fan who is 70 years old.......plus, no one has played more games in a Yank uniform than Mickey. Lastly, 'tho he was not a big fan fav until '61, since then, he's been more approchable (sic?) and beloved - - the former, at least until his death - - than other like Joe D. etc.

Also agreed on the new teams - in a few years, perhaps Helton becomes Mr. Rockie, Preston Wilson Mr. Marlin, etc.

Alvis Davis is to Edgar Martinez what Nate Colbert is to Tony Gwynn, no?

It would be cool if there actually was, for example, Mr Mariner that played for them

I always thought it was sad that Jim Brewer

What about me?

Personally, I think you should of had Ted Williams for Boston.
