Default Mustard belt comes back home to USA

CONEY ISLAND, N.Y

The annual 4th of July 'Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest' championship returned to the United States in 2007 -- after almost a decade of being won by a foreign professional eater.

Joey Chestnut, 23, bested perennial winner Takeru Kobayashi, 29, on Wednesday by chomping a new worlds record 66 hot dogs during the contest. Kobayashi managed 63.

Amazingly, both marks eclipsed the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Championship record set last year of 53 1/2 hot dogs consumed by Kobayashi.

Earlier this week, there was some question as to whether the Japanese champion would even compete because of a sore chewing muscle. Tuesday, Kobayashi still had trouble opening his mouth wide enough for a routine teeth cleaning session -- leading many to speculate about his ability to participate in the championship contest.

That paragraph made me laugh because it shows such seriousness in a hot dog eating contest.

Happy 4th everybody!

Wow, Dano, I'm impressed with all of that. The butter record is nasty. Some of my friends do that every once in a while and we are usually able to make the other throw up. Pretty funny.

That that would really make me puke. IM glad not to be Oleg Zhornitskiy. Tells a lot about his free time. Wouldn't you love to be announced at these events as the current mayonnaise slurping champion of the world?

I found it utterly ridiculous that ESPN's commentator thought that this was one of the greatest moments in American sport history and that Joey Chestnut was a true American hero.

I was not watching, didn't care to watch.

Doublee, anyone who uttered that should be hit over the head w/a baseball bat. And why the hell is it on ESPN in the 1st place?

Why are dominoes, poker, the spelling bee, and the rock, paper, scissors championship on ESPN?

The sad thing is I bet more people watched the hot dog contest than watch an average NHL game on TV....

I almost brought up the poker and dominoes, doublee, but figured we would turn this into another sport vs non-sport thread, and we wouldn't want that, would we?
