Default Pointing at the sky

What do you guys think of players doing this?

On the positive...
I appreciate players acknowledging that their talents and abilities
are gifts from God, and that it seems a nice gesture of thanks.

However, on the negative...
After some guy kicks a field goal, or makes a big catch, it actually
kind of bugs me seeing him point at the sky, because it seems to
say that, somehow, God WANTED him to make that field goal, or
catch that pass. Especially, if it's a player for Dallas, or Minnesota,
or Miami, or some other evil team, I more feel like God's pissed OFF
that the jerk made the field goal or caught the pass.

This could turn political, BUT....

I for one don't believe in any "god," so it is hard for me to comment...

However, I have a feeling that IF there is a God, he doesn't watch sports... And IF he does watch sports, he doesn't choose the winners and losers...

Furthermore, I don't really care if players point to the sky after a nice play... And I don't think "god" does either

Interesting response, Fresh.

Actually, it would be interesting to have a long conversation about
lots of things with you, Fresh, since we are on opposites of the scales,
and from your manner here, it sounds like you'd be respectful and
conversational, not just scream at me, like some liberals I know.
I'm a major religious person (both theologically and philosophical),
and a moderate conservative (most liberal ideas sound nice, but they
just don't work in reality). But, like you said...let's keep the politics
for the political board...

Still...I think we do agree...God doesn't really care who wins any
of these freakin' games that us goofy fans get so bunged up about
all the time.

That's a point, too.

Brett, I'm sure, it often thinking of his father as he continues
to play.

I think if it's sincere then it's a beautiful thing, but if it's for show then it's disgusting.

God doesn't care at all about sports. If you want to see a HILARIOUSLY BAD movie, go see Facing the Giants, it's a religious propoganda movie that argues that if you pray God will help you win football games.

Join us on the political board sometime. As long as you don't say racist, sexist or bigotted things - we'll be cool

I'd really like to discuss this particular statement you made:

Todd Pinkston used to do it - which in and of itself is sufficient grounds for my having a negative opinion of it.

Actually, I will, Fresh. Eventually.

I'm too depressed about the Packers losing for me to discuss
politics right now. Give me awhile.

i guess pointing to the sky is a lot better than pointing at the opposing team or the fans in the stands... i don't think the "sky point" is all that bad and is more humble than the usual end-zone jig..

Consider this:

If some guys think God is involved in sports and the whole winner and loser thing how do we know that the pointing is in praise of God? Maybe they think God is rooting against them.

What if guys are pointing in the sky and directing it at God as if to say...

I made that FG punk. Now what's up?

Sorry, had to do it.

I love to see some of these guys give some acknowlegement to God for the gifts they have received. Those gifts afford them the opportunity to live a life that the vast majority can not even imagine.

Whether you believe in God or not is one issue, it can be a whole different can of worms IF we begin to chastise those who do. On the other hand we have to many idiots claiming God in one breath and act like animals in the next.

Just goes to show.......God is not a bad guy, he just has bad PR people.
