Boston College to Join A.C.C.

By THE NEW YORK TIMES

Published: October 11, 2003

oston College will agree to leave the Big East Conference to become the 12th member of the Atlantic Coast Conference when an official invitation is offered tomorrow, an A.C.C. university official said yesterday.

The presidents of the 11 A.C.C. universities will hold a conference call tomorrow to vote, and Boston College is expected to be overwhelmingly approved. Boston College will immediately accept, the university official said.

In June, Miami and Virginia Tech announced that they would leave the Big East for the A.C.C. starting next season. With the addition of Boston College, the A.C.C. will be in position to hold a football championship game worth an additional $10 million.

Spokesmen for Boston College and the Big East declined to comment. A.C.C. officials could not be reached for comment.

That is great. I love competition. Also, I love conference championship games. And now, FSU may not be in a BCS bowl EVERY year.

FSU was eliminated from an automatic bid the moment Miami accepted the invitation to the ACC.

Meanwhile, this is just ludicrous. While the remaining Big East schools have filed suit against Boston College's DeFilipo for conspiracy to undermine the Big East, it was pretty common knowledge, at least up here in Boston, that the Eagles would fly, fly if the ACC came calling again. DeFilipo had said as much.

I'm not nearly as pissed about this defection as the others, because BC is merely one of those on-off schools. Some years they're good, some years they're not. And never do they really threaten to crack the Top 15. They're not a BCS school, as is the case with most of the Big East, and never will be. They'll take that bowl bid that Wake Forest, Clemson, Viriginia and NC State fight over.

The Big East is dead. Not sure what comes next. Maybe a folding into of the Big East and C-USA? Army leaves C-USA next year. Temple leaves Big East next year. BE+C-USA would be a 14-team conference, like the MAC (football only, basketball too much bigger to remain a viable conference), but without the Buffalo/directional Michigan schools. No longer in competition for a BCS bid, of course, but... whatever.

Geographically, B.C. doesn't fit with the other ACC schools. B.C. is in New England and the other ACC schools are mostly on the Southeastern coast of the U.S., as well.

Last I heard C-USA is looking to land more teams and they gave Marshall a call on it. Anyone heard about this?

Read today that C-USA has called to inquire about Marshall's warmth on such an invitation, but no invite will be extended for a couple weeks. Also, C-USA is checking out SMU, Rice, and Tulsa... ick.

In the same place, read that the Big East is prepared to add South Florida to its potential C-USA heist, originally believed to include Cincinnatti, Louisville, Marquette, and DePaul.

Also, C-USA wants to work a half-schedule with Army (who's scheduled to bug out of C-USA after 2004) AND Navy (currently unaffiliated), allowing them to play only 4 conference games, while remaining eligible for C-USA bowl tie-ins... Not quite sure how that would work.
