Top 10 current NFL players
This might be a little bit difficult to do, but who do you guys consider to be the Top 10 players in the league for this upcoming season? Now these players can come from any position whether than be Qb, Wr, LB, or even offensive linemen. I was reading on CBS Sportsline and they made out their Top 10, which I found very interesting. I will give you their Top 10, and then post mine as well.

CBS Sportline Article listing Top 10 players by Pete Prisco...

10. Brett Favre
9. Terrell Owens
8. Rich Gannon
7. Peyton Manning
6. Marvin Harrison
5. Steve Mcnair
4. Priest Holmes
3. Randy Moss
2. Brian Urlacher
1. Derrick Brooks

Other Notables.....#12 Ray Lewis, basically because of injury, #11 Vick, #25 Marshall Faulk, who has been at the top of everyone's top 10 for the past few years.

Surprises...Mcnair being the first Qb at #5 was my biggest surprise of the CBS top 10.

My Top 10 for this season...

10. Julius Peppers
9. Terrell Owens
8. Michael Vick
7. Jonathan Ogden
6. Ladainian Tomlinson
5. Steve Mcnair
4. Brian Urlacher
3. Clinton Portis
2. Marvin Harrison
1. Ray Lewis

Obviously I have some stretches in there, but that is how I see this season playing out. I see all those guys having monster years, and putting themselves among the elite of the elite. Some of those guys in my list are already elite, but some are new faces with high expectations.

So, who is on your list?

tigereyes33 05-30-2003 04:15 PM

Julius Peppers should not be there, neither should Mcnair, Portis, Tomlinson, or Ogden, I think Mcnabb should be there along with Priest Holmes.

I won't disagree with you 33, for I do think Holmes and Mcnabb have built themselves up good track records to be on this list, but I just feel those 10 players will have great years this upcoming season.

Yeah, when I was reading the article, I was shocked as well to see Derrick Brooks at #1.

One position I failed to put in my top 10 was a defensive back, and Champ Bailey is a pretty good choice there Mike.

Dublin Mike 05-31-2003 11:15 AM

Thanks Joey. Champ's numbers aren't outsatanding, but the reason for that is every one is scared to through at him.

The J 05-31-2003 02:21 PM

Very true, he's arguably the best DB in the NFL.

Brad O. 05-31-2003 04:59 PM

Champ Bailey is a great young talent, but he's nowhere close to, say, Ronde Barber.

My list assumes all these guys are healthy.

10] Jason Taylor
9] LaDainian Tomlinson
8] Steve McNair
7] Marvin Harrison
6] Derrick Brooks
5] Ray Lewis
4] Rich Gannon
3] Peyton Manning
2] Priest Holmes
1] Marshall Faulk

Apologies to R.Barber and B.Favre, who even out my top 12.

Rhonde Barber definitely makes more plays than Bailey does I will have to admit that.

Brad, at least you have Ray Lewis ranked as the top linebacker in the game today, even though he does not make your top 20 of linebackers in the history of the NFL.

Brad, the more I got to thinking about corners in the league as compared to Rhonde Barber I changed my mind on him even being in the top 4 to 5 corners in the league.

I think Barber is one of the best tacklers at corner no doubts bout that, and he plays some of the best zone defense a corner can play in the league as well, but he is not a lock down one on one corner from where I see it. If he is, then please make your points that he is.

I think Champ Bailey, Sam Madison, Chris McCalister, Troy Vincent, Charles Woodson(before his injury), and maybe even Patrick Surtain are all better than Rhonde Barber in strictly one on one corner play.

I know Rhonde has made some great plays in the last 2 years, for he had 10 interceptions 2 seasons ago, but only 1 last season. He also made some great plays in the playoffs last year as well.

Teams always attack Rhonde Barber though, and that can't be said for some of the other corners in the league. I think Rhonde does not have the speed to play one on one, and in the Bucs scheme he really does not have to because they play Cover 2 zone d virtually the entire game.

I guess it is how you interpret a you interpret him by one on one cover ability, or making plays and playing within his team's defensive scheme, whether that be zone or whatever.

You have GOT to be kidding, Joey. Barber probably got tested less often than any other corner in the league last season.

He's been an all-pro each of the last two years -- he got more votes than any other DB in '01, and in '02 SI's Dr. Z chose him as the top corner in the NFL:

Barber was my front-runner from the go, and he did nothing to disappoint me. Many teams stayed away from him for almost an entire game, which is why Brian Kelly at the other corner got so much work, and so many picks.

Barber is usually playing Cover 2 Zone, but I've never noticed a deficiency in his man-to-man cover skills, or noticed a game where I really thought he got taken apart. I also never noticed a lack of speed -- and Tiki is certainly fast -- but even so, Barber is protected by the zone, as you noted. Isn't there something to be said for being the best zone defender in the league? It certainly worked for the Bucs last year. (I do think Barber would be an elite cover corner, too, though)

I like Champ Bailey, but he's overrated. I am certain I've seen him play more often than you have, and while he's undoubtedly one of the top corners in the league, he is NOT the best, and I certainly wouldn't put him ahead of Barber or Vincent.

Surtain was great last year -- my #2 CB -- but he's just been really good before that. Madison slipped a lot last year, and Woodson is overrated and injured. McAllister's a great corner, but I prefer Barber.

You're certainly entitled to a difference of opinion, but I think Barber's the best corner in the NFL right now, and IMO there's no way he's outside the top 5.
