Yeah, it's a microcosm of the sports world. All the scandals are putting us into the "Dark Ages" of sports...

Anyone notice a common theme?

All the schools were SEC or in the South.

But that's nothing new.

Mountaineers' Devine, 3 others plead no contest to battery charges

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia running back Noel Devine was among four Mountaineers' football players to plead no contest to misdemeanor battery charges after being arrested Thursday.

Also arrested were defensive back Eain Smith, 19; cornerback Brantwon Bowser, 20; and running back/receiver Jockee Sanders, 19, the Morgantown Police Department said in a news release.

Noel Devine, who ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns in the Fiesta Bowl, was among four Mountaineer players arrested on Thursday.

Each player pleaded no contest in Morgantown Municipal Court, the police department said.

It was not immediately known whether the municipal court assessed any penalties against the players. A telephone message left Thursday night with the municipal court was not immediately returned.

Police said the charges stemmed from an altercation outside Club Z in Morgantown on Feb. 16 but did not provide details.

Underage drinking latest issue for South Carolina QB Garcia

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia paid a fine for underage drinking on Monday after being arrested over the weekend, his third run-in with police in about a year.

After practice Monday night, coach Steve Spurrier said he would let the university discipline Garcia.

"We just have to wait and see," Spurrier said. "His fate is out of my hands. ... He's had a lot of chances here, and we'll see what happens."

Garcia, a 20-year-old redshirt freshman, was one of three football players arrested Saturday for underage drinking near a campus dormitory, according to campus police tickets.

"He doesn't make any excuses and did not want to put the fans and the university through this and have more negative attention brought towards him or the school," Garcia's attorney Neal Lourie said Monday.

Garcia's brother was charged with giving beer to a minor.

Garcia enrolled early at South Carolina last year to get a jump start on spring practice but was suspended from the team after two arrests. In February 2007, he was charged with drunkenness and failure to stop for a police officer. About a month later, he was charged with malicious injury to personal property after a professor reported that Garcia had used a key to scratch the man's car. -ESPN.com

LB Fairchild suspended pending review following criminal charges

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Arkansas suspended linebacker Freddie Fairchild after he was charged with suspicion of third-degree battery and false imprisonment.

He was arrested Monday and later released on the misdemeanor charges. He was suspended pending a review of whether he violated team rules.

"He will not be allowed to participate in any team activities during the suspension," coach Bobby Petrino said in a statement Tuesday. "We will allow the legal process to take its course on this matter and Freddie will be provided the appropriate support during this time."

Fairchild "attacked [the woman] causing injuries to her head, face, extremities and pelvis," according to a preliminary probable cause statement from a Fayetteville police detective. "... She reported that he would not allow her to leave for several hours."

Fairchild has been in a "domestic relationship with the women intermittently for over a year," the statement said.

The 21-year-old linebacker started 11 games last season as a redshirt sophomore. He led the Razorbacks with 4.5 sacks. He also forced one fumble, recovered one and was third on the team with 92 tackles.

Florida State WR Parker arrested on drug, weapons charges

Associated Press

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State officials said they will have an announcement on the future of standout receiver Preston Parker after the athlete's arrest in South Florida on drug and weapons charges.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Parker was arrested early Tuesday on charges of carrying a concealed .45-caliber handgun and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana.

Parker was named Florida State's most valuable player last season after leading the team with 1,513 all-purpose yards and 62 receptions.

The 21-year-old's arrest is the first major discipline problem at the school since the arrival of new athletic director Randy Spetman earlier this year.

Interesting to see how this shakes out. Bet he's gone.

doublee 04-22-2008 07:09 PM

'Nah, that is a minor transgression at Felony State, he'll be back on the field in time for fall practices.

themush 04-23-2008 02:52 PM

But, F$U has a new AD and the gun charge (if it sticks ;)) will be a felony. Think Randy Spetman will make an example out of him?
