MLB Thought of The Day

With the season under way I thought it was time to resurrect this.

Albert Pujols set the record for most home runs in the first ten years of a career with 371 and we still have 155 games to go. Unless he gets injured he is going to end up shattering the mark by a good 40 home runs and be the first guy to hit 400 home runs in the first ten years of his career.

Pujols also has more home runs (5) than the Houston Astros (2) and driven in more runs (14) than they have scored (13).

Not a real surprise. He has Holliday hitting behind him and no one wants to face Holliday with 2 runners on.
Thusfar, I have been pleasantly surprised by Jon Rauch in his new role of closer for the Twins. 5/5 with one run allowed isn't bad at all.

Am I the only one who's dissappointed with the Sawx start to the season.

You've got Lackey ptiching a shutout, and you barely win in extra's, you've got one of the best staffs in baseball, and what's supposedly a defensive minded team, and the opening day game versus the Yanks was sick, what happened after that?

Ortiz is barely hitting .100...again, that's two years in a row. But Adrian Beltre over at third is hitting .400, and he was brought in to play D not score...I'm greatly upset by the Red Sox start this year.

How about Bud Selig saying he is concerned about the slow pace of games? Sox/Yanks games take almost 4 hours it seems! With all the slow pitching changes, pitchers' mounds meetings, and batters stepping out of the box for a sandwich and shower between at-bats, I think it is a valid point. There should be more rules disallowing delay of games.

Oh, and some black players (first Torii Hunter, now Orlando Hudson I believe) alleging racism in baseball towards blacks. I think they need to stop whining. Hudson alleged Jermaine Dye would still be playing had he not been black, but the thing is he turned down $3 mil a year.

There are rules the umpires just typically do not enforce them.

Selig, and others, have been moaning about the pace of the games for years now and have never done anything about it and they probably won't until someone can show them how much money they would potentially make or save by doing anything about it.

Rays sweep the O's.

Gonna be a great season.

They'll never do anything to increase the speed of games, because they seem intent on keeping the "integrity" of the game which is why it took so long to add replay at all, and it's still in extremely limited form.

About racism, it kind of makes sense when you look at the deals that less talented white players got in the offseason. He refused that deal because it was from a team that wasn't contending and he was seeing white players with worse stats getting 2 - 3 mil. However, I disagree with what they are saying.

Such as? I am trying to think of any black players who really got shafted this winter and none come immediately to mind.

Jermaine Dye is not a major league roster because he is 36 and not interested in being a DH. There were teams interested in him to DH next season and he insisted on a chance to play the field.

NAR(cotics) 04-15-2010 11:23 AM

I said, I don't agree with it, but it makes sense what Orlando and Tori are trying to say, I understand what they are trying to say, weather I agree with it or not.

doublee 04-15-2010 11:24 AM

But you referenced less talented white players which implies you believe some of what is being said. Unless I am reading too much into it.

Hudson hints at racism for blacks in free agency - MLB - Yahoo! Sports

There's the article that explains in great detail, why it makes sense at least in the slightest.

doublee 04-15-2010 11:54 AM

The problem with that article is they are comparing guys in their mid-to-late 30s who cannot find work over guys in their early 30s.

NAR(cotics) 04-15-2010 10:15 PM

Tell me though, if you could have any of those guys, or Dye who would you pick? I'm taking Dye.

Maybe, but nobody posting here has any experience as MLB scout (I'm guessing). Keith Law seems to think he wasn't worth what he was asking.

And the pendulum has to swing both ways. Is it racist if Gordon Hayward isn't the first player selected in the NBA draft this year? Of course not. John Wall and Evan Turner are simply better players.

It's about talent, not about race.

catman 04-16-2010 12:50 AM

Jermaine Dye still can play, but not at an elite level anymore. He would be worth a shot for a team that needs a bat off the bench or back-up DH/outfielder.
