Tom Glavine vs. Andy Pettitte

Tom Glavine has two Cy Young Awards and five twenty-victory seasons. Andy Pettitte is a former twenty one-game winner and has four World Series rings. The two elite left-handers will oppose each other at 7:05 p.m. ET on Friday when the Braves and Yankees begin a three-game series at Yankee Stadium. Who's better? Take your vote above.

I think we could get some good arguments with this thread. ;)

But I would have to go with Glavine. He's been along longer (1987-88 versus 1995 for Pettite). Glavine has his 2 Cy Youngs, his 20 win seasons, and one of the most clutch pitching performances in Game 6 of the 1995 World Series. He's a battler, a couple years back, he played without telling anybody about bruised ribs, saying that "Teams would try to bunt more on me," he's competitive. He's done the same thing this year with his shoulder and now has a slightly injured finger. But he continues to pitch. Even though he's struggled a bit early, look for him to make adjustments and get the job done. Glavine also has been with the Braves through the 1991 season when he, Smoltz, and Avery were thrown into the rotation to lead the Braves to their first world series and win the Cy Young. He should get into Cooperstown.

Now maybe in a couple years we can say the same about Pettite. But right now, in my opinion, Glavine has been the better pitcher.

Andy Pettitte

Because I'm a Yankee fan. Serious... Pettitte is SIX years younger.

Brandon 06-09-2001 04:30 AM

Yep, that's why I think Glavine is the better pitcher. He's accomplished more and has the better career stats. But give Pettite six years, and I think their careers will be comparable to an extent if not equal.

Plus, I got a bit of my Braves bias too.

How about some non Yankees/Braves fans' opinions?

Well, shucks. This comparison is not as good anymore since Pettitte left Friday's game with groin injury .

I'd have to go with Glavine. First of all he is older and has more expierience. But i think Pettitte will be better in a few years and this is coming from a Braves Fan.

Pettitte is Better

Andy Pettitte has been the man you can rely on to win the big games. I rather have him than Roger Clemons. Without him there would have beeen no four World Titles for the Yankees. He doesn't win 20 every year, but you can just about count on 16-18 wins a seasons. Tom Glavine is a master at placing the ball on the outside corner, but he doesn't have the success in the playoffs or World Series as Pettitte.
