See Ya!

The Hornets are out of the NBA and movin' to New Orleans. ESPN.com has the summary here... with a more humorous look here.

On a serious note.. another year, another team relocated. I'm not one that big into NBA business but what d-ya'll think about this one?

The J 05-10-2002 10:32 PM

Lee, those links don't work.

Marc 05-10-2002 11:45 PM

They do for me, J...

You'd expect me to have an opinion on this, of course, right? I think it's a good move because as much as I liked Charlotte in our "glory" days of the mid-'90s, things weren't working out present day. This is primarily the owners' fault, but we're stuck with them.

New Orleans looks like they have strong support for the Hornets with loyal sites like NewOrleansHornets.com already open (a daily visit of mine). In fact, TV ratings for the area were higher for Hornet games than in Charlotte.

I'm looking forward to when we have a large and supportive crowd once again.

Personally I think at first New Orleans will support the team, but in the long haul they're not going to be any better off than they were in Charlotte. The owner's the problem, not the city.

air_canada 05-11-2002 10:06 AM

Yep! This won't change much. Who expects a uniform change?

Don't forget, the reason fans aren't supporting them like they used to in Charlotte is mainly because the owners are disliked and threatened to move the team each year. This was because they were losing money at The Hive. So if they are content in New Orleans and don't make any threats or dumb moves, the fans could be some of the best in the league soon.

But knowing the Hornet owners, they'll do something to irritate fans as they are not well-liked people. They got booed at the last game big-time.

As for the uniforms, I always thought black-and-gold would look cool, but it looks like that won't happen - at least the first year.

Links work for me also . . . .

Sooooo........... if a team sucks and are no long in their "glory days," instead of rebuilding you just move them???? Is THAT how it works these days???

air_canada 05-11-2002 02:27 PM

Yea, black and gold would look pretty good, like the Saints unis.

The reason the owners wanted to move is because they were losing money in the current arena with no enough box seats, etc. So they wanted a new arena, but the city didn't vote in favor of it. It has absolutely nothing to do with a team's performance - that's kind of why it's like a divorce and the Hornets are the innocent kid indirectly involved.

lmanchur. 05-12-2002 12:29 PM

So then why aren't/weren't fans showing up in Charlotte?? It's not like their team wasn't competitive this year and last year.

Bran 05-13-2002 09:58 AM

Maybe fans just lose interest in the game, Lee is right if I was down in Charlotte id be going to the games because there is some really good talent on the team (Davis, Mashburn, Wesley) just like it is in New Jersey, 1 team in the East and they have a hard time selling the place out.

Because it's not longer their team, Lee - it's official that these will be the New Orleans Hornets next year. 13,000+ loyal fans showed up for the last game and the other 7,000 needed for a sellout don't support the team anymore.

air_canada 05-13-2002 06:39 PM

:( The Hornets had a great life at the Hive.

lmanchur. 05-13-2002 06:58 PM

Ya Marc -- I'm saying BEFORE they were gonna leave... what I'm asking is WHY FANS weren't showing up before?? Like, is that the reason they're leaving???/ What is the reason they're leaving??? I haven't paid attention and am wondering.

My point is, if they've had this good of a team, the fans should be showing up thte past 2 seasons. I might add that Winnipeg fans sold out all end-of-season and playoff games their last year in the NHL even though everyone knew back in December they were gonna leave.

The fans HATE the owners. The owners are like the anti-Mark Cuban, they don't care about anything but money and satisfying themselves. Cuban does things for the fans. When Michael Jordan was going to return, he wanted to play for Charlotte since he's from Carolina, but the owners turned him down. Think that made the fans happy? One of the owners had some lawsuit thrown at him by one of the team dancers, think that made the fans like the owners?

The reason they're leaving is not because the fans aren't coming, the fans aren't coming as a result of all the bad stuff the owners have done and them threatening to leave. Get it?
