Emmitt Smith to retire this offseason

Running back Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all-time leader rushing, will retire this offseason, sources told ESPN's John Clayton and Chris Mortensen.

He was always one of the classy guys in the NFL. He was a great back, but very humble. I hope he can bring some of this class to the Vikes organization when his group buys it from Red McCombs. Maybe Emmitt can even put a muzzle on a certain WR?
Thanks for all of the thrills, Emmitt.

I've always hated the Cowboys, but Emmitt is a classy legend and I have much respect for him. I especially like how he just handed the ball to the refs after scoring a TD.

Hey, I'm a Skins fan, but that didn't stop me having a 3ft by 2ft signed picture of Emmitt on my wall celebrating the day he broke the single season TD record. Don't have it any more though, as I gave it to my Cowboy loving friend when I left the U.K.

Emmitt did start to get a little grouchy towards the end of his career. But I would to playing for the Cards.

Word is he's signing a one-day contract with the Cowboys, and then he's retiring. 'Bout an hour.

Good.
Should retire as a Cowboy. I like that move.

I grew up with that generation of football players, Marino, Emmitt, Montana etc.... What I mean is those players were meant allot to me because that is when I first started getting into football. My first generation of football players retiring= I'm getting old :(

Who is left? Rice, T. Verdy, Favre... :(

i never really got into football the way i am now, until after a lot of those guys were gone...like i caught the end of Marino, dont really remember anything about Montana except for the stuff i saw on ESPN and all that....the only team i paid attention to back then was the Cowboys, and Emmitt, Aikman, and Irvin will always be the guys i remember as the Cowboys...ya know?

I was born in '86 and lived in Illinois about 2 hours away from the dominating defense generated in Chicago abour 11 months earlier in their win over the Patriots in the Super Bowl. I battled through Montana's magic in SF and the Bills AFC dominance. But yet somehow I came out a Dallas fan.

Aikman, Johnston, Novachek, Allen, Woodson, Irvin, Newton... These were the guys I admired as Dallas captured 3 Super Bowls in 4 years, a feat unmatched until now (as the Pats look to do it with a win over philly). But the shining star was and always will be Emmitt Smith. I remember the day that Emmitt took the ball against a trash-talking Seattle team and broke Walter's record. I have the picture of it.

Emmitt should be admired for so much in his career and as a Cowboy, I'm sad to see him go. Thanks for the memories 22.
