The downfall of Google

Do these results seem fishy to you? http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...=Google+Search

Companies are doing something called "Google bombing" to get listed higher in the rankings. The end result? You get way too many commercial listings instead of legit results. Check this out: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/1868395.stm

I sure hope Google can correct this so its results remain reliable and accurate. It would be horrible to see Google crumble. It's branching out into all these areas, even online data services which it launched briefly, and it needs to keep focus on its bread and butter: search.

I second your feelings, Marc. Google is such an outstanding search engine that it's been my HOMEPAGE for over a year, a testamant to how often I use it.

i don't see what's wrong... the #1 page is exactly what you are looking for, isn't it??

MountaineerDave 01-26-2004 11:25 PM

Aside from the first entry, Lee, it's all a bunch of online ticket windows and paraphernalia shops...

I think, if I were searching for a team's name, I'd want to find something NOT selling me stuff, or, at least, some reasonable mix. History, fan sites, etc.

It's just a matter of one too many words.

Lets get SC up there... I suggest the following words:

Paris Hilton, boobs, Britaney, J-Lo... we'll clean up.

:D

This happens with other searches that I've had as well. I hope google does do something about it because it's very annoying. I wanted to check out some reviews of tvs. All I kept getting was buy buy buy websites and websites like cnet.com weren't anywhere near the top.

I'm having the same problem while checking hotel rates for Vegas. Type in the hotel casino you want to look up and you get about 2 or 3 pages full of cheap discount hotel sites rather than the main hotel website.

bama4256 01-27-2004 04:23 PM

I haven't had any problems with google yet thank God.

Marc 01-28-2004 04:38 PM

This is a definite problem, companies are rigging the rankings and when you try to find legit info, you get commercial junk.

Simon, SC has no problems with rankings: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...=Google+Search

#1 out of 3,330,000. ;)

Wouldn't you say that in the spirit of business, "Google bombing" is a pretty smart idea?

It is annoying, but I think it will be difficult for Google to correct it. Not that I know anything about it, but I recently read a Time Magazine article about Google and its competitors, and it gave as a reason for Google's success a complex mathematical formula of some sort that enables the engine to sort the pages in order of popularity; now, the owners of 'commercial junk' sites need not understand the formula (which remains secret), just how to make use of it to their advantage.

Marc 02-04-2004 07:09 PM

But Google is Google because it provides good search results for consumers. If it is only good for businesses, no one will use it, and in return, businesses won't benefit. I have a fairly good grasp on Google's workings seeing as how I am a webmaster. Google bombing may be good for greedy, cheating companies, but that is most definitely not good for Google or you and me.

KevinBeane 02-06-2004 01:42 AM

Here's another yucky example:

Shawndo 02-12-2004 10:41 PM

Yeah I've run into quite a lot of junk results from Google lately...
I sure hope they can fix that issue, but if not - who's going to be the next 'Google'?
