Best "new" rivalries...

Steve Megargee of Rivals.com gives us the best new rivalries in college football...

1. Louisville - West Virginia
2. Auburn - LSU
3. Texas A&M - Texas Tech
4. Florida - South Carolina
5. Kansas State - Nebraska

Texas A&M and Texas Tech have been playing every single year since 1942. How is this new?

Plus Tech has owned A&M in the series lately...winning 9 of 12.

K State - Nebraska?

They've played nearly 100 times. Just because K State has won 5 of 9 doesn't mean this is something to crow about. Nebraska has been down for quite awhile now. K State has posted 3 straight subpar years.

I like L'Ville - WVU. I think that merits mentioning.

Florida - South Carolina?

Yeah...Spurrier...we get it. SC won back in 2005 and the game was close last year. How does that mean anything with all the history and other great teams roaming around the SEC?

Ultimately it's up to the fans of these teams to decide. Far be it for me to put labels on outsiders. :D

Still...some of this is pretty invented if you ask me.

Anyway...what about ND-Michigan (had to get some Midwest love in here ;))? The two teams have been playing each other every year since only 1979. Plus they are #1 and #2 in all-time wins. What more could you ask for?

Yeah, the K-State Nebraske thing doesn't make a lot of sense.

Um, I dunno. Does the resurgance of Cal mean I can put Cal/USC?

Yeah...some rivalries go thru slow periods but then they pick up again.

If you go by that reasoning I nominate Wisconsin-Ohio State.

Over the past 15 years they've won or shared the Big Ten 9 times. And in those 15 years the series is tied at 5-5-1.

Wonder why he didn't list TexAss/ Oklahoma

Would have been nice if he actually gave the criteria for this. Buckeye brings up a good point, if these teams have basically played every year over the last 60+ years is it really a "new" rivalry?

Even though Va Tech has pretty much owned them the last few years the Va Tech/Miami game is usually a pretty fierce battle.

While the criteria isn't given (as doublee noted) I think Texas/Oklahoma didn't make it cuz it has been relevant since the beginning of time...locally and nationally.

The "newness" of the rivalry is from the less dominant team rising a little...I think. Nebraska OWNED K State prior to the last decade.

Good call on V Tech-Miami even though it has lost a little luster the last year or two.

Ohio State - Penn State is another good one. Look at the series since the Lions joined in 1993...

1993 Ohio State 24 Penn State 6 (played in a snowstorm...I was there)
1994 Penn State 63 Ohio State 14 (I try to forget this ever happened)
1995 Ohio State 28 Penn State 24
1996 Ohio State 38 Penn State 7
1997 Penn State 31 Ohio State 27
1998 Ohio State 28 Penn State 9
1999 Penn State 23 Ohio State 10
2000 Ohio State 45 Penn State 6

and then things really heated up...

2001 Penn State 29 Ohio State 27
2002 Ohio State 13 Penn State 7
2003 Ohio State 21 Penn State 20
2004 Ohio State 21 Penn State 10
2005 Penn State 17 Ohio State 10
2006 Ohio State 28 Penn State 6 (PSU led 3-0 late in the 3rd and only lost in the final minutes of the game)
