After-draft Discussion

So who all was at the baseball league draft last night? I stayed until round 15 - then really had to get off. Luckily, we had a 2-hour delayed opening because of snow/ice, so I got to check out some things this morning. :)

I got Helton with my first pick, #4. I think I'm most weak at SP, where I lack an ace, but have some guys who could emerge to that roll: Colon, Pettite, Seley, etc. I also am a little weak at SS, where I have Reese and Vizquel. What about you?

lmanchur. 03-18-2002 09:51 AM

Well, I'd say I have an abundance of starting pitchers (Johnson, Ishii, Reed, Appier, Wagner, and Kim... not to mention Sirtoka who should have a real good come-back year after sitting last year out with injury, and also David Wells) and a lack of infield talent.

Nate 03-18-2002 10:20 AM

Well, I missed the draft and FORGOT TO PRERANK!...but I don't think I faired too badly...My stars include Frank Thomas, Curt Schilling, and Barry Bonds. I need some good pitching. Besides Schilling, my staff is pretty mediocre. Man! How could I forget? :(

Erickson 03-18-2002 11:08 AM

I was there till the end...my OF is weak (Lawton, Dunn, Alou, Jenkins) but if my pitching stays healthy I'm good to go (Martinez, K. Brown, Mulder, Milton, Dempster.) Also have to hope Nomar comes back from injury to play well.

Brandon 03-18-2002 04:07 PM

One word: pitching. I have none besides Hudson. I really, really like my offense though. I've always tried to balance my team between pitching and offense in drafts, but I don't know what got into me last night, and I'm hoping some of my lower guys can have some good years.

Marc 03-18-2002 09:11 PM

Season starts 03/31, can't wait! :)

lmanchur. 03-18-2002 09:35 PM

I'm available for preseason trade talk.. I don't typically do much trades once the season starts but all offers preseason are weighted evenly.

I've already been in contact with "I need a name" (still can't remember who that is :) ) but that's it for now.

Brandon 03-19-2002 01:23 AM

Lee you can't remember your own comissioner? ;)

Richard the Lionheart 03-20-2002 09:22 PM

I think I faired well. I dont think my team has a huge weakness in any area, although I could use another starter, but Clemens and Sabathia should be good this year. I have A TON of relievers.

And Lee, how could you pick that Iishi guy with your first pick!?!?!?!

lmanchur. 03-20-2002 11:11 PM

Well.. here's the thing -- first, it was my 2ND pick.... secondly, I wanted to be strong on pitching, and I think that I've accomplished that.... but I ordered my prerankings by position (not by my actual rankings), and put the players with multiple positions (ie: Giambi, 1B, DH) at the bottom.... but at the draft time I had forgotten about that and didn't see any good power guys at the top of my list, and if I had remembered Giambi waaay at the bottom, I would've defeinitely taken Giambi (the "real" one.. not the "fake" one (Jeremey) that I got at the end of the draft ;) ) over Ishii but..... I think it worked out.

Brandon 03-23-2002 03:15 AM

Lee, I've left that deal open for the sole purpose that its probably the only deal I would want to make now, I would usually consider Wagner, but I think my RP is solid enough right now.

lmanchur. 03-23-2002 09:46 AM

Brandon: Did you get my e-mail?

Brandon 03-23-2002 02:19 PM

Well, I think I did, if you're talking about the one a while ago. We're talking now though, so we'll see...

Richard the Lionheart 03-24-2002 08:37 PM

Anyone need a closer???

Marc 03-24-2002 11:58 PM

I'm sitting pretty good with Rivera. :)

lmanchur. 03-25-2002 12:32 AM

Ya, I have a good bullpen too -- with Wagner, Zimmerman, and Kim.

Brandon 03-27-2002 01:03 PM

Well there certainly seemed to be some trade talk going into our fantasy season. Is everybody ready come Easter Sunday to compete? I know I am.

Marc 03-27-2002 07:47 PM

I am - I really can't see a glaring weakness in my squad, but I guess there's only one way to find out - that's why we play the game! :)

Brandon 03-28-2002 12:46 AM

Well, my sleeper closer in Farnsworth is useless now. We'll see how Rocker does. I want to pull a Beltre deal off with LA, but I don't want to give him up for nothing because I'm predicting a breakout year for him, and any trade I make would almost seem lopsided.

Marc 03-28-2002 04:49 PM

Rocker gave up a ton of hits and runs in a few innings the other day for Texas - anyone hear about it? Hope he performs better than that - he seems to have a nack for being inconsistent.

lmanchur. 03-29-2002 01:46 AM

Damn Brandon!!!!!!!!! Zimmerman went on the DL on Wednesday so I was going to replace him witht he obvious guy -- his replacement in MLB, Rocker... but Ididn't wanna give up Zimmerman so I was waiting for Y! to put him on the DL so I could put Rocker on w/out penalty. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :redhot:

:D

Brandon 03-29-2002 02:32 PM

No problem Lee. :D We'll see how he does, maybe he'll do bad and I'll let you have him. :)

Richard the Lionheart 03-29-2002 09:47 PM

Brandon, I wouldnt count on Rocker putting up good numbers at all this season. I think that Danny Graves would certainly be a nice upgrade. Propose a trade if you are interested. Im looking for a solid position player.

Brandon 03-30-2002 02:21 AM

Oh trust me, not like I'm counting on Rocker to be my saivior. But there are other closers on the waiver wire I can also try, and I'm still not sure Graves would be closer, Boone might try to convert him to a starting pitcher, which wouldn't be what I'm looking for out of Graves. But I am looking for a SP, but I may have found one in a trade...

Richard the Lionheart 03-30-2002 02:36 AM

Okay, I might even deal Smiltz if the deal is right. I have a lot of relievers and I cna afford to loose one.

Richard the Lionheart 03-30-2002 02:37 AM

*Smoltz

Nate 03-30-2002 12:27 PM

That's what the "Edit" button is for Rick. :D Sorry...had to give you a hard time.

Richard the Lionheart 03-30-2002 11:00 PM

That takes too long :)

Marc 03-31-2002 10:54 AM

So is anyone here going to be editing their lineup daily for the season, which starts Monday? In basketball, I did it each day so everyone would be playing who is and I edited my lineups each weekend for the entire next week. In baseball, most of my players are playing each day, anyway, but I've edited my lineup for the first week to try to avoid having an empty starting spot.

lmanchur. 03-31-2002 11:57 AM

....I edited my line-up for the first 4 days of play the day after the draft :D

Brandon 03-31-2002 10:43 PM

I'm into Fantasy baseball a lot more than football or basketball, so I always check my teams each day.

You happy you got rid of one of your closers Rick? I know I could always use the depth, and I have a strategy now that my pitching is getting a lot stronger. And all those OF's couldn't play every day. Should be a good deal for both of us, I'm really high on Hidalgo.

Richard the Lionheart 04-04-2002 11:36 AM

Yes, Im happy with it. I still have two closers, Ididnt need three. I had good pitchers sitting on the bench. It should work out nicely for both of us. I think we have made the only trade so far.

Brandon 04-04-2002 11:01 PM

This is the first trade of the year. Now I have the three closers, but I'm gonna keep em all. And I like my Mussina pickup too.

Wedge231 04-06-2002 05:13 PM

I've been making daily changes in all my baseball leagues.
