Running Boxing thread.

I figured we needed a central place to post all things boxing. The year kicks off in earnest this weekend starting with Allen Green on ESPN and the Peterson brothers fighting on shobox this Friday. I think Paulie Malignaggi beats Herman Ngjodu in a boring and decisive UD.

I'm waiting for the Felix v. Roy fight because....

Ya'll Musta Forgot

davematthews3 01-03-2008 04:04 PM

That is such a mismatch that it doesn't intrest me at all. I am looking forward to the undercard though Specifically Andrew Golota vs Mike Mollo.

davematthews3 01-16-2008 02:11 PM

I think Roy wins this weekend By Ko in under 6
I am very nervous about one of my all time favorites Golota he has looked sluggish and unattentive in training this could be a Brewster Replay but God I hope not.

doublee 01-16-2008 02:26 PM

Golota still fights?

davematthews3 01-16-2008 03:12 PM

Yes he just turned 40 but I believe if he can mentally stablize himself he has a hell of a run left in him.

doublee 01-16-2008 03:15 PM

Has he ever been mentally stable?

Calzaghe, Hopkins set light heavyweight bout for April in Vegas

Associated Press

LONDON -- The long-awaited fight between Bernard Hopkins and Joe Calzaghe will take place in Las Vegas on April 19.

Six years after Calzaghe's camp tried to set up a matchup with Hopkins, the unbeaten Welshman's handlers announced Wednesday that the fighters will meet as light heavyweights at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The bout for Hopkins' Ring magazine light heavyweight championship will be Calzaghe's first fight at light heavyweight after 21 consecutive world title defenses at super-middleweight. After unifying three world titles by taking the WBA and WBC titles from Mikkel Kessler on Nov. 4 to move his record to 44-0, Calzaghe knew he had to move up a division to take on Hopkins.

"He definitely needs a facelift and I'm going to sort him out," Calzaghe said at a London news conference. "I just hope he's not going to run.....

Thank God for this fight. Finally the Myth of Joe Calzaghe will be exposed. Thoughts on Roy Tito Mush? Went basically the way I thought couldn't believe roy didn't finish him though. Golota showed heart for the first time in his career not sure where that came from. Also Oscar is supposdly going to figh Steve Forbes on HBO May 3rd. What a joke of a fight that is then Floyd in september. That is a joke as well.

Hopkins is definitely in the driver seat on this one IMO too but I'm reluctant to sell Calzaghe too short, DM3

He's one of those quick southpaws who I think tends fights to the level of his opponents. Hopkins should bring out the best in him which means Bernard'll have his hands full IMO...

Plus between the 2, I think Hopkins has been showing more wear. I wouldn't be surprised to see Joe use his savvy ring presence & aggressiveness to keep Hopkins off stride. He very well could win this one...

Jones/Trinidad on HBO tonight. Anti-climactic but what the Hell...

davematthews3 01-26-2008 10:40 PM

Followed by Povetkin Chambers which I am really looking forward too.

Tarkus 01-27-2008 10:31 AM

Jones/Trinidad was basically what you'd expect from 2 aging fighters. While entertaining, it didn't make you think of a future for either fighter.

Jones looked the better of them but against a younger, solid punching fighter, I get the feeling it would have left him open for another KO like what's plagued him in his last fights. He looked good but just a bit slower.

Tito just looked soft at the higher weight & definitely more open for abuse. Even in his prime, he took quite a bit of abuse but without his constant aggressiveness & crisp power shots, he's just not gonna get it done.

Povetkin/Chambers was like a club fight to me. Once again, entertaining to a degree but neither fighter showing much IMO tho Chambers has the speed if he learns to use it more & corrects his habit for standing there to be abused while just waiting to counter. On offense, he's too quick to just rely on a left-right for offense. If he starts mixing things up, moving side to side with a semblance of applying reasonable constant pressure, he might grow into an upper echelon boxer.

Povetkin is just too 1 dimensional to me. With his lack of defense, it looks like he's at a buffet with all the shots he was eating. He only won cuz of Chambers relative inactivity & his penchant for just standing in front of him...

davematthews3 01-27-2008 12:27 PM

Well said Tark. I don't know if he would do it but I think Eddie would be much better off dropping weight and making it as a CW better suited for that division I believe. Could be a real force there

themush 02-02-2008 11:29 PM

Dave, I caught the replay of last nights Friday Night Fights on espn2. You get a chance to see, Meza-Clay?

BTW, ODLH choosing Mayweather Sr. over Freddie Roach puzzles the s hit out of me??????????
