Default Paul Newmans Greatest Roles

In no particular order.

Empire Falls (2005)
Newman won his only Emmy and a Golden Globe for his final on-screen role. In the miniseries based on the Richard Russo novel, Newman plays Max Roby, the crusty, straight-talking patriarch of a complicated Maine clan.

Road To Perdition (2002)
In his last appearance on the big screen, Newman played John Rooney, a crime boss in the Great Depression who is conflicted when his biological son murders the wife and youngest boy of Rooney's adopted son Michael Sullivan

Slap Shot (1977)
Newman played Reggie Dunlop, a veteran player/coach of minor league hockey team, which is set to be folded at the end of the season. He cons the violent players into believing the team will be sold to Fl

The Sting (1973)
Henry Gondorff (Newman) and Johnny Hooker (Redford again) play con men who team up to plan a "long con" against a Mob boss to avenge the death of Hooker's partner. The film won Best Picture.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)
Newman played Butch Cassidy to Robert Redford's Sundance Kid, a pair of doomed bank robbers who terrorize the Old West.

Cool Hand Luke (1967)
Newman played Luke Jackson, a swaggering, nonconformist inmate in a Florida prison whose escape attempts make him a hero, and ultimately a martyr. It nabbed him his fourth Best Actor nomination.

Hud (1963)
Newman earned his third Best Actor nomination for playing the morally bankrupt Hud Bannon, whose crude, womanizing ways clash with those of his principled cattle rancher father, Homer (Melvyn Douglas).

The Hustler (1961)
As "Fast Eddie" Felson, Newman played an irresistible bad boy, a grifter in the world of competitive billiards, which earned him his second Best Actor nomination. He'd later reprise the role opposite Tom Cruise in The Color of Money.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)
Newman starred as Brick Pollitt opposite Elizabeth Taylor in this Oscar-nominated adaptation of the classic Tennessee Williams play. Though he didn't win, Newman received his first Oscar nomination for his role.

The Long Hot Summer (1958)
Newman played the brash Ben Quick, who Will Varner (Orson Welles) tries set up with his daughter Clara (Joanne Woodward). Newman and Woodward married after completing the film and went on to star in 10 movies together.

The Color of Money (1986)
Reprising his role of "Fast Eddie" Felson, Newman takes Tom Cruise's Vincent under his wing to teach him the art of the hustle. Newman finally won an Academy Award for his work in this film.
