Default Jason Giambi

Even without his health concerns, does anyone feel he is the player he was a couple of years ago? I really don't see him fitting in with the Yankees anymore and would be really surprised to see him in pinstripes next season. His contract runs for a couple more seasons and is pretty big, so he'll be fine, financially even if he isn't able to play.
What do the rest of you think? Does he have anything left or is he done?

I personally think Michael Vick is gay.....uh, wait, wrong thread. (that's for you KB)

I don't think Giambi is done simply because he has a contract (so the Yanks can't simply dump him) and a competitive spirit that will not allow him to just quit. Now, if he really was just sick with a rare stomach virus, like it has been reported, then maybe all it takes is him getting healthy in the offseason and hitting the weight room again.

With the exception of this season, he was still a powerful force with the Yankees, it's just masked a bit because of the unbelievable numbers he put up when he was with Oakland.

Well, the AIDS rumor I'd never heard, but the idea that he had a tumor (idea or fact?) in his thyroid gland, coupled with his being named as a witness in the Balco mess, has lent suspicion as to whether he's long been on the juice.

I think that if he can't be healthy, or a decent hitter, that the Yankees would send him home and pay him, or attempt to void his contract (esp. if there's the possiblity he was using banned substances while a Yankee) and send him home.

Meanwhile, with the known issues that he's had in the last twelve months, I don't think we can rule out Gulf War Syndrome.

Except that he was never in the Gulf. Still, can't let facts get in the way of a good rumor.

At this point, Giambi is a risk. He is slowing down and becoming an everyday DH is more and more likely in his future.

the yankees owe giambi another 40million over the next 4 years

they can't trade him with a salary like that

so the options are:
release him to free agency and lose money on penalties
or hold on to him and continue paying him much more than he's worth in hopes that he'll make sum sort of comeback

my personal opinion on giambi (and no i have no factual evidence to back this up) is that he was on steroids, had to stop taking them for health reasons, and now he's all f'd up... i think this because they've been so shady about what his injurys/illness has been this whole season. i've heard mokey pox to intestinal parasite to serious stomach virus.

You forgot the tumor as well. It would not surprise me if he were on the juice given that his name comes up in the whole BALCO fiasco about as much as Bonds does.

I think the Yanks may give him one more year. As far as we know his injuries and illnesses were legit and had nothing to do with whether or not he was on steroids. He deserves the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.

I don't think Giambi will ever return to his old form. Perhaps thats why the Yanks were talking to Delgado

They aren't getting Delgado. I hope they do, though, because then they can't get Beltran.

And welcome to the boards Hornet.

Giambi may be done. ESPN reports that Delgato will be a Yankee soon...

Giambi has never been on top of his game since he left the A's and I think he took roids and stoped because of health reasons like timmyg said. Yanks cant trade him and he probably will never be back in his top form. Giambi used to be nasty but now he's nuthing but a vegtable worth 40 million
