Default Roland Garros 2005

On the men's side....

Can anyone other than Federer, Nadal or Coria win?

Possible dark horse finalist: PH Matthieu

The top of the draw is loaded, Coria has a much better draw at the bottom than both Federer or Nadal at the top.

On the women's side...

Henin-Hardenne is back, so is Clijsters.
So is Venus who won Istanbul Cup last week. FOr the first time in many years the women's side looks to be more open than men's..

Let's hear everyone's opinion as the tournament progresses.

As an American fan, non-diehard, I have to say that it's hard to follow this. There isn't a single America in the men's draft, the Williams sisters are out, and we're left with mostly a bunch of people the average fan hasn't heard of.

It's sad a major is getting so little publicity here. Golf majors always get more press than this, and we can only hope tennis makes a similar comeback. Andy Roddick, please, win another major!

In tennis, I think there are only two majors of importance to most American fans: Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Anyway, when and where is the coverage of this on TV? I will try to catch some action.

I'm also American, and not a die-hard fan, but I have rather a different view. The early rounds don't usually interest me much, but when the stars come on in the later rounds, my interest piques.

I disagree, though, that Roddick and the Williams sisters -- none of whom were really good bets to win at Roland Garros in the first place -- are the only players the average fan has heard of. If you ever read the sports section, you at least recognize names like Federer, Henin-Hardenne, Lleyton Hewitt, Davenport, Agassi, Sharapova.

I will say, though, that the French appeals to me the least of the four majors. Clay produces such different results than the other surfaces that fluke wins are much more common, and players like Roddick and Venus -- dangerous contenders on any other court -- aren't likely even to make the semifinals. My favorite tennis major, I think, is actually the Australian, which has produced some incredible matches in the last few years.

Coverage of the French is on ESPN 2.

I can't wait for Wimbledon. It's kind of a summer tradition for me to watch it. Nothing else is on in June, so I watch it during the days.

The French is also my least favourite tournament. Mostly due to the fact that NBA and NHL (not this year) playoffs are going on, and baseball is still technically starting as well.

Federer is a force. The guy can play anywhere in the world, on any surface, and still put on a clinic. It's an absolute travesty he doesn't get the respect he deserves.

I'm really looking forward to a Federer/Nadal semi-final. It's all the hype this year. The current master vs. the new rising phenom.

Rafa Nadal beat Federer to reach the finals today. I don't think there is currently a hotter name in all of sports. Period.

Wow, shocking. I will have to watch for Nadal. Haven't seen him play yet, but I hope he can be a young Sampras. I hope he isn't one of those clay court specialists. Will he also stand a good chance on grass at Wimbledon?

I think it remains to be seen how he fairs on grass. Given his record this year, he looks like a master of the clay. I mean, cripes, this was his first ever French Open and I think he dropped all of two, maybe three sets. He absolutely rolled in the final.

Yep ... there is still debate over whether Nadal is anything more than a Spaniard clay-court specialist. Time will tell.
