Default All-Star Voting

I caught part of Sportscenter this morning and there was a segment on the MLB All-Star voting. Nomar Garciaparra is leading the NL Shortstops, Jason Giambi has 200,000 votes, and Derrek Lee, the best hitter in the League as of right now, is a distant second to Albert Pujols.

My stance is MLB needs to do away with fan voting if the All-Star Game is going to determine home field advantage for the World Series. Fans either vote based on name recognition rather than play for that season, or possibly purposefully sabotaging the League which their favorite team does not play.

Thoughts?

If the allstar game is set to continue to mean something, then they should take away the fan vote from being the major contributor to an all star selection. The Nomar vote is the stupidest thing I have seen for a long time. They voted for someone even though he barely played, stunk it up when he did and would be injured and unable to play during all star week. Great choice.

I agree, it's time to take away fan voting if it is going to continue to "count". Nomar as the starting shortstop for the NL is an absolute joke and an embarassment for baseball. Heck, Tino Martinez shouldn't be starting at first for the AL, it should be Mark Texeira or Paul Konerko.

Every sports league needs to do away with fan voting for all star games. It's been proven time and time (and time and time) again that fans don't know s***.

I also still find it ludicrous that the All Star game determines home field advantage for the WS. You're telling me Todd Helton of the juggernaut Colorado Rockies (or any other number of players in a similar position) has a vested interest in the outcome of the game, knowing that his team won't do any better than last place? Puh-lease.

Let the fans vote for the players they want to start the game and increase the roster sizes to be sure the best players are on the team. The starters only have to make an appearance on the field, and can be replaced anytime the manager wishes. If the starter, voted by the fans, is unable to compete (Nomar), no problem.

i dont mind fan voting- its logical to let the fans see who they want for an all-star game, but the having it mean home field advantage is a bad idea just for the sake of ratings. an AL team could win 20 more games then the NL team going to World Series yet because they didnt win the All Star game they dont get home field? that just isnt fair.

I agree with your point blackdogsong, but I guess it's somewhat more logical than a couple seasons ago when home field just switched every year.
On the topic of All-Star voting, has anyone voted online or at a ballpark? I'm not big on the system, but that doesn't mean I haven't used it this season

Online, I've been stuffing the proverbially ballot box with:
AL:
1st: Mark Teixeira
2nd: Brian Roberts
Short: Miguel Tejada
3rd: A-Rod
C: Jason Veritek
OF: Johnny Damon, Ichiro, Gary Scheffield

NL:
1st: Derrek Lee
2nd: Mark Loretta
Short: David Eckstein
3rd: Scott Rolen
C: Paul Lo Duca
OF: Carlos Lee, Miguel Cabrerra, Bobby Abreu

Do you truly believe that fans actually tune in to watch the All Star Game just to see who is going to get home field advantage in the World Series? I know I don't. The whole this time it counts schtick is the lamest marketing ploy I have seen in a while.

Doublee -- you are correct. The ad campaign is based on the tie a couple of years ago. That should never have been allowed and, hopefully, won't happen again. If it does what happens? Is the WS played at a neutral site?

I am most outraged by the fact that, as a fellow fan, there are so many blatantly ignorant and out-of-touch fans. Who in their right mind would vote for Giambi or Nomar in 2005? Are most fans, the non-diehards, this out of touch? I'm surprised more didn't pick Mark McGwire, although I'm sure he'd be there if he was on the ballot.

Marc, you have to remember that there are people that vote for the name, rather than the player. Nomar and Giambi are still names, although neither has played up to "all star" standards.
Like I said, the best way to handle this situation is to increase roster sizes to include the best players, as selected by managers. Perhaps the players should vote for a player at each position as well. If they agree with the fans on that player, great. That frees up a roster spot for another favorite. If not, both players should make the roster.

I like the current setup. I'm more interested in the game because of the home field goes to winner arrangement. I also like that the fans can get involved in the voting, even if they're idiots-- for the most part they'll pick worthy players. It's interesting to see who the current (undeserving) fan faves are, there are always a couple... guess Nomar would qualify this year. Well, i'm off to vote for Eckstein or Izturis or Barmes for the first of 21 consecutive days, who'll join me?

no, im just saying it's not a fair way for decide home field. i agree that it is a bad marketing ploy- but i guess it worked last year since ratings were up- until The Rocket tanked, lol.

Exactly, I'm not arguing that that's not happening. I'm upset that it's happening, period. I am frustrated ignorant people vote just by name, not qualification.
