Default Free Agent Frenzy

The free agent signing period has been underway for a few days now and things are starting to pick up now.

What has your team done or are they rumored to be doing?

I'm a Bruins fan and today has been the biggest day so far. One day after acquiring Brad Isbister for a fourth round draft pick from the Oilers, the Bruins announced the signings of Glen Murray and Shawn McEachern today. There has also been rumors circulating all day that Mike Modano could be in the black-and-gold by days end. They are also rumored to have some interest in Miroslav Satan.

So how are things shaping up for your team? Any big moves yet?

Boston, theoretically, is one of the teams coming out of this new CBA agreement that is in great shape. Modano rumors have been flowing everywhere. Boston? Phoenix? Who knows. It'll be interesting. But if the B's don't lock up Joe Thornton, they'll have missed the boat.

Myself? I'm a Kings fan all the way. Love 'em. Looks like today we just acquired a young goalie by the name of Jason LaBarbera who comes to town with impressive numbers from the AHL. He'll probably be backing up Cechmanek.

The whole league is blowing up, though. The Flyers just opened a can on everyone by signing three monster defensemen in Derian Hatcher, Mike Rathje, and Chris Therien. Needless to say, their blueline will be solid as a rock if healthy.

Adam Foote - prized defenseman - signs in Columbus. That's huge for the Yellow Jackets.

Finally, Steve Yzerman is coming back for his 22nd season with the Red Wings. Incredible. I thought for sure the lockout would've sent him into retirement.

- Mike Modano is staying put in Dallas.

- Chris Pronger was just traded to Edmonton! The Blues get Eric Brewer and a couple prospects in return, but whoa! Pronger an Oiler.

- I'm so psyched about this one: Pavol Demitra signed with the Kings. Sweet! As long as there is at least one Slovakian scoring machine on the front line, I'm happy.

Some more moves:

- Peter Forsberg signs with the Flyers for 2-years worth $10.7 million.

- Markus Naslund re-signs with Vancouver to a three year $18 million dollar deal.

- Oilers trade Mike York and a conditional draft pick for Mike Peca.

- Miroslav Satan signs a three year deal with the Islanders.

- Montreal re-signs Alexei Kovalev to a three-year $18 million dollar deal.

- Jarome Iginla signs a three year extension with the Flames worth $21 million.

- Sergei Gonchar signs with Pittsburgh in a five year $25 million dollar contract.

- Boston signs Brian Leetch to a one year $4 million dollar deal.

So far the only real big move made by the Rangers was signing Martin Straka. I wouldn't expect many big moves since the organization is going in a different direction, away from the high priced free agents.

Things just keep getting better for the Pens. Before you know it, they'll be holding up the Cup!

I think that the Flyers Islanders and pens are three of the most improved teams in the league that divison should be good because the Devils are always good and the rangers are hopefully building something respectable in two to three years.

Modano has agreed to resign with the Stars after earlier telling them no. I guess he had no other takers.

Yes, considering we took the current stanley cup champions to game 7 of the conference finals....theres only 1 place left to go! I still think the pens are going to be an average team, 1 kid and a defenseman who while having the most points in the last 6 years, also has a negative +/- in the last 6 years.

Forsberg is the best player in the NHL by far imo. The Flyers are over the cap and will have to clear up space. Leclair has gotten his contract extended.

For the kings fan, Roenick seems to be coming to Sacremento via trade to make room for Forsberg.

So far the Flyers have made the biggest splash signing Forsberg, Hatcher, Rathje, and Therien. If Peter the Great stay's healthy they'll be really tough to beat.

The Penguins are still a while away, but they'll be a good team. Under the new rules Crosby will have a big season. The Oilers are surprising me, picking up Pronger and Peca is huge for them.

I'm sure you meant Los Angeles. Sacto is a different sport, buddy. Anyway, Roenick to the Kings is a reality and I'm stoked about that. LA has some firepower upfront. Flyers, of course, had to move him so that they could land the league's best player in Forsberg.

This is like a fantasy draft, by the way. Well, almost. I, too, am impressed by Philadelphia's moves as well as Edmonton's moxy - trading for both Pronger and Peca. Conversely, St. Louis and Colorado seem to be the clubs taking the most punishment during this free-for-all.

This will be a weird sight: Scott Niedermayer not in a Devils uniform. He just signed with Anaheim. The Ducks are another club that could make a big splash now that Brian Burke is running the show.

Niedermayer is an important guy with the new rules the defensemen that can make the tape to tape pass is going to be one of the most important commodieties if the devils also lose Rafalski they could end up falling behind the Islanders and Flyers.
