Default Picks For Week Of Sep. 30-Oct. 1

Green Bay
Miami
N.Y. Giants
Buffalo
Minnesota
Denver
San Diego
Oakland
Philadelphia
N.Y. Jets (59)

If you would like to see my picks for the remaining four games, and also my picks against the spreads (although this week they just happen to be all the same as my straight-up picks), you can check out my analysis below.

_______________________________________

Last week: 8-6. Season totals: 14-15-0, Pct. .483. Best Bets: 3-3, Pct. .500.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team.

SUNDAY

N.Y. GIANTS 20, New Orleans 10 (+3) - Saints still need to prove they can beat good teams and emotions will be running high for the Giants in their first home game since the pusillanimous attack on the World Trade Center, the site of which is actually visible from the stands at Club Med.

Indianapolis 24, NEW ENGLAND 0 (+10) - And New England's offense goes from being Drew Bledsoe And The Ten Dwarfs to The Brady Bunch this week as someone named Tom Brady starts for Bledsoe, who is out due to internal bleeding, among other things. Groovy, Marcia!

Kansas City 17, WASHINGTON 7 (+2 1/2) - Over the last three years teams coming off being shut out were 6-17 straight up the following week. And while both teams are 0-2, the Chiefs have vastly superior form, losing their two games by a total of 13 points to teams with a combined 2000 record of 24-8 whereas the Redskins have lost theirs by a collective 64 points to a pair of opponents that finished 10-22 between them a year ago.

Green Bay 21, CAROLINA 10 (+4) - Chris Weinke hasn't looked all that bad in his first two starts but here he takes a significant step up in class from the defenses he faced in Minnesota and Atlanta. Also must respect Green Bay's history in road games on natural grass: 21-11 straight up dating back to 1993.

MINNESOTA 23 (+2), Tampa Bay 16 - Even if the league does manage to keep the full playoff field intact, the Vikings are all but through unless they win this. Fortunately for them, though, three powerful trends indicate they almost certainly will, the first one being the fact that the home team has won and covered six in a row in this series and the other two being Tampa Bay's 3-9 spread record (second worst in the NFL) the week after a bye and its 11-22 straight-up mark since 1991 as a visitor in domed stadiums.

BUFFALO 27 (P), Pittsburgh 17 - Bills have been AWOL (especially on defense) in their first two games but this week they are most definitely in their element: The last time Pittsburgh shuffled off to Buffalo and shuffled back home with a victory was all the way back in 1978. Since then? Seven losses, and only one spread cover. Plus, the Steelers aren't much better following a week off than the Buccaneers are, as their spread record in that situation is 4-8 (and in this case it will have actually been two weeks off).

Miami 24 (+6 1/2), ST. LOUIS 23 - Aesop, he of fable fame, would have loved this matchup: Talk about the tortoise (Jay Fiedler) versus the hare (Kurt Warner)! What's more, the ending figures to be the same as he scripted it, as the Dolphins have never lost a road game to the Rams (4-0 both ways) and domes don't seem to bother them either, as they have won and covered in five of their last seven closed-air appearances, including three victories visiting an opponent (Indianapolis) with both strengths and weaknesses that closely resemble those of St. Louis.

JACKSONVILLE 31, Cleveland 7 (+7 1/2*) - The Browns appear to be inching toward respectability, but Jacksonville has been a relentless nemesis, beating them four out of four (also covering in three), outscoring them 123-28 in the four games. So we'll downplay the possibility of the Jaguars experiencing a letdown after their victory last week over injury-ravaged Tennessee.

DENVER 24, Baltimore 17 (+4 1/2) - They used to say that no one circled the wagons better than the Buffalo Bills. Now it can be said that no one copes with injuries and moves on better than the Denver Broncos! No doubt most of the hype surrounding this game will concern the head-to-head pairing of Mike Shanahan's offense and Brian Billick's defense, which is just fine by Art Modell; otherwise, people might be focusing on the fact that Modell has seen his team lose ten of the last eleven times they have gone to Denver, with the lone victory being by a one-point margin.

ARIZONA 28 (+4), Atlanta 27 - The visiting team can't buy a win or cover in this series of late (four consecutive losses both ways, including three outright upsets as favorites) and wins or covers by the Falcons on grass and outdoors from 1995 onward (5-21 straight up and 8-17-1 against the line on the former and 6-29 and 12-22-1 respectively in the latter) have been few and far between. So despite what you may have witnessed this past Sunday evening, tab the Cards.

OAKLAND 23, Seattle 6 (+10) - How bad is Matt Hasselbeck? Going into last week's game, the Eagles had allowed an average of 253 yards passing per game in their last five regular-season outings dating back to last November. Hasselbeck netted 21 yards against them! With Misbegotten Matt at the controls, Seattle's offense bears an uncanny resemblance to Philadelphia's in Ray Rhodes' last year as head coach there - the year the Eagles finished 3-13 and Rhodes got fired.

SAN DIEGO 27, Cincinnati 12 (+5) - This game brings together two of the happiest guys in the NFL right now: Cincy quarterback Jon Kitna and San Diego offensive coordinator Norv Turner, who must be laughing their heads off at the respective travails of Hasselbeck and Marty Schottenheimer. Look for the Chargers to prevail in this unlikely battle of unbeatens as the Bengals have been consistently lousy at Jack Murphy - losing their last three games there by scores of 27-14, 27-10 and 27-10 - and a letdown on their part after that shocker over the defending Super Bowl champs is an outcome no mortal can stay.

PHILADELPHIA 20, Dallas 0 (+12 1/2*) - Post-Aikman progress report: Through two games - both at home - Aikman's successors (Quincy Carter and Anthony Wright) are averaging 108 yards passing per game and their cumulative quarterback rating is 46.5. Now this sorry show has to go on the road. God bless America's Team!

MONDAY NIGHT

N.Y. JETS 35, San Francisco 24 (+3 1/2) - All of the comments from the Giants game apply equally to this game. Simply substitute "49ers" for "Saints" and "Jets" for "Giants."

BEST BETS: MINNESOTA, BUFFALO, JACKSONVILLE

*Cleveland at Jacksonville in a circle because Jaguars RB Fred Taylor is doubtful and Dallas at Philadelphia in a circle because Eagles RB Duce Staley is questionable.

That was a guideline mentioned from the beginning, Week One. Only ten games will be selected. I usually throw out the cake picks each week.
