Default A bad apple???

So we finally have a gambling ref story....whew...

I was beginning to wonder if it was like the Unicorn...

FBI probes NBA ref for game-fixing

The FBI is investigating allegations that veteran NBA referee Tim Donaghy bet on basketball games over the past two seasons, including ones in which he officiated.

Defense attorney John Lauro confirmed Donaghy is under investigation but refused to comment on the allegations or the case.

ccording to a law enforcement official, authorities are examining whether the referee made calls to affect the point spread in games on which he or associates had wagered.

The law enforcement official, who spoke to the AP on Friday on condition of anonymity, said the referee was aware of the investigation and had made arrangements to surrender as early as next week to face charges. The official, who did not identify the referee, is familiar with the investigation but was not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.

The law enforcement official said the bets involved thousands of dollars and were made on games during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Donaghy officiated 68 games in the 2005-06 season and 63 games in 2006-07. He also worked 20 playoff games, including five last season.

The NBA issued a brief statement Friday: "We have been asked by the FBI, with whom we are working closely, not to comment on this matter at this time."....

However, it sure is making the Mayor of Vegas happy...
**********************************************
Vegas mayor: Allegations won't hurt bid

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Mayor Oscar Goodman is confident allegations that an NBA referee bet on basketball games won't damage Las Vegas' bid for a team.

If anything, Goodman said it could strengthen his city's case.

"I think that there's going to be a public recognition that Las Vegas does monitor this kind of alleged activity," Goodman said Friday.

"I don't want anyone's bad fortune to cause us good fortune, but I think it will cause people to look at Las Vegas in a light perhaps differently than they do, because we do in fact regulate this kind of activity."

The FBI is investigating allegations that veteran NBA referee Tim Donaghy bet on basketball games over the past two seasons, including ones in which he officiated. The probe also involves allegations that he had connections to organized crime associates, the kind of suspicious link the mayor says is closely watched in Nevada.

Though NBA commissioner David Stern previously had said he would not put a team in Las Vegas as long as there was betting on basketball, he amended his position earlier this year. He said a decision would be left to the owners and allowed Goodman to submit a proposal to them before the Board of Governors meetings in April.

After those meetings, Stern said a committee would be formed to further review Goodman's plan, and Goodman said there since have been "light conversations" with the league.

Goodman's proposal offered no compromise on gambling, such as a plan to prohibit action on a Las Vegas team. He doesn't think it's necessary, because the Nevada Gaming Commission and Gaming Control Board would keep a close eye on it.

"We're the only regulatory agency in the world that really looks at unusual activity as far as the movement of the line and that type of conduct," Goodman said. "That's why whenever red herrings are thrown up that somehow Las Vegas is a bad place because we have sports betting, I look at it just as a reverse. I think it's a good thing that Las Vegas has the type of regulation that makes sure that bad things don't happen."......

Ric Buecher said yesterday that he believes...and others have said the same to him...that it would be tough to fix/shave by yourself and one would need the help of the entire crew.

Again...to early to tell.

That sounds more than plausible tho if a ref has a gambling problem & has been making bad decisions for some time, him being successful at it probably isn't a requirement...

Good one!

I was in the Cayman Islands, switching channels on our hotel t.v. and when I saw this on ESPN my jaw dropped! I don't know why I reacted to it so naively, but in this day and age I would've thought the league would have better tabs on this kind of stuff going on.

I'm really surprised that it has taken this long for something of this nature to come to the surface. NBA refs are probably the most scrutenized officials in all sports, being graded on a nightly basis. That being said, it would be more difficult to pull off such a scandal. As long as there is money, there will be crooked people trying to make an easy buck. I used to be naive and believe that the was little to no corruption in the 3 major sports, until the NFL playoffs, two seasons ago.

If this report is true, the facts should start coming clear a lot sooner than we expected...

************************************************

Report: Feds believe Donaghy may help

Federal authorities believe Tim Donaghy, the referee at the center of a game-fixing probe, will cooperate with investigators and possibly implicate other officials or players involved in the scandal, according to a report in the New York Daily News.

Citing law enforcement sources, the paper reported Donaghy used mobbed-up bookies to place thousands of dollars in bets over the past two seasons, including games he officiated.

The same sources said two of the bookies are expected to be arrested this week after Donaghy surrenders to authorities in New York, perhaps as early as Tuesday.

Investigators do not know yet whether the scandal extends beyond Donaghy.

"Who knows what he'll say if he comes in," a law enforcement source told the Daily News.
