Default Top Franchises in Sports History ......

For a laugh, and because I know it will start what will hopefully be an intense heated discussion, I would like everyone to name what they believe are the most successful sports franchises in history.

I will humbly start with the four major sports leagues here in North America ..........

Baseball ...... The Yankess

Basketball ...... The Celtics

Football ...... The Cowboys

and I guess you all know my pick for Hockey

One more thing, please try to be as unbiased as possible when selecting these teams. Please don't nominate a team such as the Tampa Bay Lightning because they are your favorite team. Even though I'm a Habs fan, I'm more than willing to defend them as my selection for hockey.

Interesting... Three different selections in football.

I have no beef with Canadiens in Hockey, non (besides hating them) with the Yankees in baseball.

I think Lakers fans would be unwilling to allow anyone but the Lakers as the top franchise in basketball, while other teams' fans will happily divide between the Knicks, the Celtics, the Lakers, and potentially the Sixers.

But football... the Raiders make some sense, but nah, not really... the Packers are a decent pick... the Steelers after 1972 have a good argument, but were stink-out-loud bad for decades prior to the '70s, so no... The Niners stunk till the '80s.

And so the question is: what makes a franchise a top franchise? Is it the number of titles? Then its the Niners. Is it the length of time being in the discussion? Then it's either the Cowboys or Raiders. Is it the matter of being a storied franchise? Then it's the Colts or Giants.

I like the Raiders if for nothing else the fact they have a slogan and Al Davis. " Commitment to Excellence" and " Us against the World" just makes them so cool. ( said like an 11 year old playing video games )

Hey, college...

College B-Ball....UCLA
College Football...Notre Dame

Kevin...

I think the Bad News Bears would be my pick for team with most spunk, so I'll back you up buddy.

Baseball- Yankees
Football- Packers
Basketball- Would like to say the Knicks and could make a decent argument out of it but I'll concede and take the Celtics.
Hockey- Canadiens

College Football- Notre Dame
College Basketball- Tough call between UCLA, Kentucky and North Carolina. I'll go with Kentucky.

This seems like the type of discussion that can just be solved by who has the most championships in each sport... which would leave no room for discussion. If that's the case, then obviously:
Yankees
Celtics
Cowboys
Canadiens

However, I think are far better debate would be what are the best dynasties of all time. Certainly the four teams above all have a stake at some point in history.

Baseball would certainly be the Yankees. Just a matter of which era you prefer. Them and the Big Red Machine in Cincy.

Basketball you have the Celtics of the 60s, Lakers in the 80s, Bulls in the 90s to name a few.

Football. Steel Curtain, Dallas in the early 90s, San Fran in the 80s. Today's Patriots, perhaps?

Hockey. Probably still defer to the Habs, but what about those great Oiler teams of Gretzky, Mess, Kurri, Coffey, Fuhr, etc, etc? Or the early 80s Islanders?

As a Raider fan, I think having Al Davis has hurt us. Not so much when he was younger, but certainly in the last 15 years. But that's a conversation for another thread.

Dave
Dave,

I just have to know, how anyone...........lol..........could make and argument here for anyone BUT the Lakers or Celtics. I mean the Knicks Dave?????

The Knicks have 2 titles in 58 years, the last coming 31 years ago and they have only made 7 apperances in the finals in that time.

Dave are you mixing something that Boston Tea? Hot toddy maybe........hmmmmm. Stop working SO many hours Dave!

Dave I agree about the NFL though, thats a tough league to pick a single team out of. I started to...........and I couldnt.

Hockey- Canadiens, because everyone says so and I no ZERO about Hockey.

Basketball- Lakers get the very slight nod over the Celts. Celts have more titles 16 to 14 but the Lakers have played in almost half(28 out of 58) of the NBA finals series that have been played.

Baseball- Yankees.

Football- This I cant decide..........Cowboys, Packers and Niners is what I have it down too, but I cant pick one.

College basketball- UCLA by a smidgen over Kentucky, but and argument could be made for sure to reverse.

College Football- USC...........Ok, so its probably ND, but I could sling alot of mud about HOFamers and probowlers at the next level, the most first round picks of any university, blah, blah, blah,............to make ME feel good about my argument............lol.

College Baseball- USC.........this is to make me feel good.

Fight On!
