Question Eastern Conference Finals

Here we are in the Conference Finals! Very exciting

In this series I like Miami in 7. Detroit's superior defense may be the ticket, but I think a healthy Shaq and Wade, working together and playing the right way, can get the job done.

What are your picks?

This is going to be a great series. It's hard to pick against the Pistons' experience and tough defense, but I love the Shaq - DWade combo.

An edge the Heat will have in this one is Stan Van Gundy is more willing to use his bench, and does so quite well. I couldn't figure out what Brown was thinking, waiting until Game 5 to give Carlos Arroyo some p.t. The kid can play. You'd think he would realize that when Arroyo handed the Olympic team its lunch last summer

Anyway, I voted Pistons, but honestly I think you can toss a coin on this one

Well, I have been espousing how the Pistons are the team to beat out of the East this year. I don't think Shaq is going to be truly healthy until the season is over and the Heat needs the Diesel firing on all cylinders if they want to unseat the Pistons as Champs this year. The Pistons perimeter defense is far superior to that of the Wiz and Wade will be hard pressed to go it alone against Detroit. I like the Pistons in six or seven games if Shaq is healthy enough to play every game. If Shaq cannot go then I like Detroit in five or six games.

Octane, Arroyo did not play because he is not an 'American' he is Puerto Rican and Larry Brown seems to have a disdain for any player born outside of the 48 contiguous states. Just ask Toni Kukoc.

 Good point! I hate to see someone as talented as Arroyo fester on the bench. I'm not saying he should start ahead of Chauncey, because Billups is still the superior player. But jeez, who cares if Carlos was born on Mars? The guy can dish the rock. Just another reason why I think Larry Brown is seriously overrated.

Honestly, though, I don't know if that truly is the case. There seems to be something going on in his head. I have a feeling he is listening more to the Stuart Scott's of the world who were pumping him up as the next great young PG instead of listening to his coaches. He was all but annointed the true successor to John Stockton and ends up getting run out of Salt Lake for Elden Campbell, whom the Jazz cut loose, and a future number one pick.

But, Brown does seem to have an affinity for keeping foreign players on the bench in favor of American players.

That theory would certainly explain the limited playing time Mehmet Okur saw last season, and of course Milicic, who has seen only slightly more floor minutes in the League than I have.

Pistons in six.

Shaq's injury kills Miami's hopes, and i don't care how good Dwayne Wade is (damn good, by the way) he alone cannot elevate his team past the Pistons. I don't see anyone stopping Detroit.

Miami over Detroit in 7

Shaq and Wade are unstoppable when they are on top of their game. Wade certainly is after his impressive performance to close out Washington and Shaq will be well rested. Detroit has the defense to limit Wade and Shaq, the obviously will not run and shoot all over the Pistons as they did with the Wizards. This should be an interesting series with the defensively-minded Pistons attempting to slow down the explosive offensive attack the Heat display.

Pistons in 7.

Expect most of the games in this series to be very close. The pistons will come up with the bigger stops and scores late in the game.

Pistons in seven. I give it to Detroit because Shaq is far from healthy and they have the experience. Wade is in uncharted territory.

Pistons will have an easier time against the Heat than they did against Indiana! Pistons in FIVE!

Far from healthy? Is it just me or does a 'bruised thigh' fail to convince you guys... I mean come on, a 'bruise'? For millions of dollars, you'd think a guy could play with a little inconvenient bruise...
Give Shaq a vicodin and a Red Bull.. let him recuperate in the off season, I mean come on...

Heat in 7

I'm assuming Shaq's not as hurt as missing a few games would suggest-- I think he was saving up. We'll see about that.

Pistons are actually a bad matchup for the Heat in many ways: they've got big bodies who can play D on Shaq, they've got a guard (Prince) who can post on Wade or Jones, and they've got a guy (Hamilton) who can tire Wade out on screens if that's the matchup.

I'm picking the Heat anyway despite those bad matchups because Shaq and Wade plus some key 3pt shooting will be too much for the Pistons to handle despite their advantages on paper.

Well, this isn't the first time Shaq has milked an injury!

Another note: Detroit has a team that makes it's free throw shots. This may be the difference between the two teams. (more so if Shaq does play!)

Playing devil's advocate, I'd like to point out Shaq had 100 CCs of blood drained from his thigh this past week, so I wouldn't necessarily think he's milking this the way he has past regular season injuries. I think he realized Miami would roll over Washington with or without him, so no sense in rushing the rehab process or skipping it altogether when you have a chance to rest.
