Talking Baseball Rankings Week 15

Weekly rankings include all games played from March 31st through July 14th. See where your favorite team is ranked and why.

1.--ATLANTA BRAVES--(58-34)-Braves split a four game series with Montreal. Braves won Thursday night 8-5. Pitcher Kevin Millwood ran his record to 7-5 with that win. He pitched six innings, allowing six hits. He struck out six. Closer John Smoltz earned his 32nd save. Outfielder Gary Sheffield hit his 16th homerun of the year. He had four RBI's. He's finally swinging a hot bat. Andruw Jones hit his 20th in that same game. Braves have won 39 out of their last 52 games. Pitcher Tom Glavine has not been pitching well lately. He's been having a problem with blisters on his pitching hand. He lost Saturday to Montreal 6-3. Greg Maddux has also been hurt off and on.

2.--NEW YORK YANKEES--(57-34)-Yankees murdered Cleveland Saturday 14-5. Pitcher David Wells earned the win. He is now 10-5. Second baseman Alfonso Soriano hit two homeruns to give him 22. Catcher Jorge Posada hit his 16th which was a grand slam. The fifth of his career. His second of the year. He had six RBI's in that game. Yankees haven't lost a series in Cleveland since 1993. Pitcher Roger Clemens is on the DL. He has a pulled groin. Man that hurts. Jason Giambi has a .431 OBP tied with Kansas City's Mike Sweeney.

3.--SEATTLE MARINERS--(58-34)-Seattle beat Tampa Bay Friday 2-1. Pitcher Jamie Moyer got the win. He is 9-4 now. He allowed only two hits in seven and 1/3 innings. DH Edgar Martinez went 2-3 which included two doubles. That gives him seven on the year. Ichiro leads the team in batting with a .355 average. First baseman John Olerud is batting .317. Mariners lead the AL in team pitching with an ERA of 3.62. They also rank first in attendance. Drawing over two million so far.

4--ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS--(54-37)-Arizona beat Los Angeles three out of four this weekend. They now trail LA by a half game. Pitcher Curt Schilling improved to 15-3 by beat LA 3-2 Friday night. Kim earned his 24th save. Junior Spivey hit his 10th homerun of the year. Greg Colbrunn hit his fourth. Matt Williams came of the DL and hit his first homerun of the year in that 2-1 loss Sunday night against LA.

5.--LOS ANGELES DODGERS--(55-37)-Dodgers salvaged one game out of that four game series against Arizona. They won on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball 2-1. K.Ishii earned the win. He is now 12-5. He allowed only two hits in seven and 2/3 innings. His ERA is 3.32. Catcher Paul Lo Duca went 1-4 with one RBI and Adrian Beltre produced the other run.

6.--BOSTON REDSOX--(53-36)-Boston lost three out of four to Toronto this past weekend. They had beat Toronto 11 straight before losing to them Friday. They did win Thursday night 10-3. Pitcher John Burkett improved to 8-3. He allowed five hits through six innings of work. Slugger Manny Ramirez hit his 10th homerun of the season. Shortstop Nomar Garciaparra went 1-4 with two RBI's and his 31st double of the year. Brian Daubach went 3-5 with one RBI and one run scored. He hit his 16th double of the season.

7.--ANAHEIM ANGELS--(53-37)-Angels beat Kansas City Friday 11-3. Pitcher Kevin Appier earned the win. He is 7-7. He allowed six earned runs. Outfielder Garrett Anderson went 2-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored. He hit his 16th homerun of the year and his 30th double. He leads the team in RBI's with 66.

8.--OAKLAND ATHLETICS--(53-39)-Oakland beat Baltimore Saturday 6-0 behind the pitching of Barry Zito. Zito improved to 12-3. Olmeda Saenz hit his fifth homerun of the year and Miguel Tejada hit his 16th. He had three RBI's. Tejada leads the team in RBI's with 65. Jermaine Dye went 3-4 with one run scored and he hit his 17th double of the year.

9.--MINNESOTA TWINS--(53-40)-Twins beat Texas 5-4 Sunday. Kyle Lohse started the game but J.C.Romero earned the win to improve to 5-1. Eddie Guardado got his 28th save. Outfielder Torii Hunter hit his 21st homerun of the season. Man did he rob Barry Bonds of a homerun in the 2002 All-Star game. What a catch. DH David Ortiz hit his sixth homerun in that 5-4 win over Texas and Bobby Kielty hit his sixth.

10.--SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS--(52-39)-Giants beat Colorado Saturday 6-1. Pitcher Jason Schmidt improved to 5-3 with that win. Catcher Benito Santiago hit his ninth homerun of the year. Second baseman Jeff Kent went 4-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored. He hit two doubles to give him 24 and one triple which was his first of the year. Barry Bonds has a OBP of .554. Unreal! Giants lead the NL in team hitting with 451 runs scored.

11.--ST. LOUIS CARDINALS--(49-39)-Cardinals beat San Diego 4-1. Pitcher Bud Smith earned his first victory of the year. He went seven innings, allowing only three hits. J.D. Drew hit his 12th homerun of the year. Catcher Eli Marrero went 1-3 with one RBI. Edgar Renteria went 3-4 with one run scored.

12.--MONTREAL EXPOS--(48-43)-Montreal acquired outfielder Cliff Floyd from Florida this past week. Expos played the Braves tough this weekend. Winning two out of four. They won Sunday 10-3. Javier Vazquez improved his record to 7-5. Wil Cordero hit his third homerun of the year which was a grand slam. Second baseman Jose Vidro went 3-4 with one RBI and three runs scored. He hit his 26th double of the season. First baseman Andres Galarraga went 3-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Outfielder Vladimir Guerrero hit his 23rd homerun in Saturday's 6-3 win. Newcomer to Montreal, pitcher Bartolo Colon beat Atlanta Saturday, pitching a complete game. Expos won 6-3. Colon's second win against Atlanta as an Expo. History tidbit-Expos became the Expos in 1969.

13.--CINCINNATI REDS--(47-44)-Reds beat Houston Sunday 8-3. Pitcher Jared Fernandez and knuckleballer earned his first major league win. He struck out eight batters. Danny Graves earned his 27th save. Aaron Boone went 3-5 with one run scored. He hit two doubles to give him 15 on the year. Catcher Corky Miller went 1-3 with two RBI's and his 10th double. Outfielder Raul Gonzalez went 3-5 with one RBI and one run scored.

14.--FLORIDA MARLINS--(45-46)-Marlins swept by Chicago Cubs this weekend. Marlins acquired outfielder Juan Encarnacion from Cincinnati. I really figured the Reds needed Encarnacion with Griffey Jr hurt again. In Friday's 16 inning loss of 5-4, outfielder Preston Wilson of the Marlins ran into the Ivy wall and dropped the ball to allow Chicago's Angel Echevarria to scored in the 16th.

15.--NEW YORK METS--(45-46)-Mets beat Philadelphia Sunday 4-2. Pitcher Pedro Astacio improved to 9-3 with that win. His ERA is 3.14. He struck out three and allowed four hits through seven innings. Second baseman Roberto Alomar went 1-4 with two RBI's. He hit his 16th double of the season. Will manager Bobby Valentine be next to go bye bye?

16.BALTIMORE ORIOLES--(43-46)-Orioles beat Oakland Sunday 6-3. Pitcher Rodrigo Lopez improved to 9-3. He pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits. Outfielder Jay Gibbons hit two homeruns to give him 16 on the year. He had five RBI's in that game.

17.--HOUSTON ASTROS--(44-46)-Astros beat Cincinnati Friday 6-3. Pitcher Wade Miller improved to 5-3. He pitched five innings, allowing eight hits. He had five strikeouts. Closer Billy Wagner earned his 16th save. Shortstop Julio Lugo and outfielder Daryle Ward both hit their fifth homeruns of the year. Ward had three RBI's. Outfielder Lance Berkman leads the majors in RBI's with 82.

18.--CHICAGO WHITE SOX--(44-49)-Chicago beat Detroit Sunday 6-4. Pitcher Jon Garland improved to 8-6. Outfielder Carlos Lee hit two homeruns to give him 15 on the year. Rey Ordonez went 3-5 with one RBI. He's batting .304. DH Paul Konerko leads the team in batting with a .325 batting average.

19.--COLORADO ROCKIES--(43-49)-Rockies beat San Francisco Sunday 5-3. Pitcher Shawn Chacon improved his record to 4-6 with that win. He allowed only three hits through seven innings of work. Second baseman Terry Shumpert hit his fourth homerun of the year and catcher Gary Bennett went 2-4 with two RBI's. Hard lucked pitcher Mike Hampton lost Friday night 9-0. He is now 5-10. His ERA is 6.55. But he's batting .342. Rockies pitching has a combined ERA of 4.88.

20.--CLEVELAND INDIANS--(41-49)-The rebuilding Indians beat the New York Yankees Sunday 10-7. Pitcher Ricardo Rincon improved to 1-3 with that win in relief of Chuck Finley. First baseman Jim Thome hit his 27th homerun of the year. Shortstop Omar Vizquel went 3-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. He also hit his 18th double. Bill Selby hit a grandslam against Yankee closer Mariano Rivera, his first homerun of the year. His first homerun since June 17th 2001. He was extremely excited as he rounded the bases after hitting that grand slam in the ninth inning.

21.--TEXAS RANGERS--(40-50)-Rangers beat Minnesota Saturday 8-1. Shortstop Alex Rodriquez hit his 29th homerun in that game. Rodriquez hit his 30th and 31st homerun in Sunday 5-4 loss to Minnesota. Pitcher Kenny Rogers was the winner. He is now 10-5.

22.--PITTSBURGH PIRATES--(41-50)-Pirates beat Milwuakee Saturday 5-3. Pitcher Kip Wells improved to 10-6 with that win. Closer Mike Williams earned his 27th save. Outfielder Brian Giles hit his 25th homerun of the year. Giles is batting .303. Kevin Young hit his 11th. Chad Hermansen hit his seventh homerun of the year. Catcher Jason Kendall could be going to Colorado soon.

23.--PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES--(41-49)-Phillies beat the New York Mets Friday 9-8. Pitcher Robert Person improved to 4-5. He worked six innings, allowing eight hits. Outfielder Pat Burrell hit his 23rd homerun of the year and third baseman Scott Rolen hit his 14th going 3-5. Outfielder Bobby Abreu went 2-5 with two RBI's and one run scored. He hit two doubles to give him 28 on the year.

24.--CHICAGO CUBS--(38-51)-Chicago defeated Florida 10-3 Sunday. Rookie pitcher Mark Prior improved to 3-2 with that win. He had five strikeouts. His ERA is 3.88. Slugger Sammy Sosa hit his 29th homerun of the year. Corey Patterson hit his eighth and shortstop Alex Gonzalez hit his 10th. Third baseman Bill Mueller also hit a homerun to give him three on the year. First baseman Fred McGriff having a good solid year with 17 homeruns and 57 RBI's.

25.--SAN DIEGO PADRES--(36-55)-Padres beat St. Louis 4-3 Friday night. Pitcher Mike Holtz earned his first victory in relief of Brian Lawrence. Closer Trevor Hoffman earned his 21st save. Bubba Trammell went 1-3 with three RBI's. He also hit hos 10 double of the year.

26.--TORONTO BLUEJAYS--(37-53)-BlueJays beat Boston Saturday 4-1. Pitcher Chris Carpenter improved to 2-1. He had six strikeouts. Third baseman Eric Hinske went 4-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. He hit two doubles to give him 23 on the year. Carlos Delgado went 1-3 with one RBI and one run scored. He hit his 19th double.

27.--KANSAS CITY ROYALS--(35-54)-Royals beat Anaheim 12-2 Sunday. DH Raul Ibanez hit his 12th homerun of the year. He tied a club record by knocking in seven runs. Johnny Damon was the last Royal to accomplish that and he did that in 1996. Outfielder Michael Tucker hit his fifth homerun.

28.--DETROIT TIGERS--(34-56)-Tigers won a doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox Saturday. In the first game Detroit won 5-3 and in the second game they won 3-1. Ex-Athletic Carlos Pena went 2-4 with three RBI's in the first game. In the second game Bobby Higginson hit his sixth homerun of the year. First baseman Randall Simon went 2-4 with one RBI. Simon leads the club in RBI's with 49.

29.--MILWUAKEE BREWERS--(34-58)-Brewers beat Pittsburgh Sunday 5-3. Pitcher Rueben Quevedo improved to 5-6 with that win. Shortstop Jose Hernandez hit two homeruns to give him 17 on the year. He drove in four runs.

30.--TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS--(29-60)-Devil Rays beat Seattle in 10 innings Saturday 4-3. Outfielder Randy Winn hit his eighth homerun of the year. Winn is batting .312. The only real All-Star on the team. DH Aubrey Huff went 2-4 with one RBI.
