Default SCMB NFL Pick'em Contest: Super Bowl XXXVII

SCMB NFL Pick'em:
Super Bowl XXXVII
Tampa Bay vs. Oakland

Ok, guys! This is it! Bucs vs. Raiders. Nate vs. The J. Let's do it!

First off, thanks to everyone that participated this year! It was definately a success and I hope to see you all next year!

Now to the matter at hand. Everyone is welcome to select picks and are encouraged to do so, but obviously, only The J and myself will be eligible to claim the title of champion.

Here is how it's going to work. Selections will be chosen from 5 categories: the tradition winner of the game question and 4 questions about aspects of the game itself. The player with the most number of closest guesses will be proclaimed 2003 SCMB Pick'em Champion!

The Questions:
Pick a total for each of the following:
1. Who will win Super Bowl XXXVII?
2. What will be the combined score?
3. How many sacks will the Tampa Bay defense have?
4. How many passing yards will the Oakland offense have?
5. How many combined turnovers will be commited?

Ok, so the questions suck, but they are better than last year's!

Good luck, J. May the best man win!

Last week: 1-1. Postseason totals: 6-4, Pct. .600. Best Bets: 1-2, Pct. .333.

SUNDAY

Oakland 26, Tampa Bay 17 (+3 1/2) - For the fifth time since the merger, the team with the better regular-season record finds itself an underdog in the Super Bowl; three of the previous four won outright (the Colts in Super Bowl V and the Redskins in Super Bowls XVII and XXII), and the other one covered the spread without winning the game (the Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII).

That's the good news for Tampa Bay. The rest of it's all bad.

First, the Buccaneers were eliminated in the wild card round of last year's playoffs, and no wild-card loser has ever won the Super Bowl the following season; by contrast, the Raiders lost in the divisional playoffs a year ago, and eleven such teams have won Super Bowls the following year - the most common previous-season result for Super Bowl winners historically. Second, thanks to the Jon Gruden "trade" the Bucs did not make their initial selection in the 2002 draft until the third round - and no team lacking both a first- and a second-round pick has ever won the Super Bowl in the ensuing season; and third, Tampa Bay got here by winning a road game in the playoffs - a statement that is true of only nine of the last 26 Super Bowl champions, compared with 17 who qualified by winning twice at home, as Oakland did.

But enough of trends and on to matchups: Tampa Bay's league-leading pass (and total) defense was able to stop a one-dimensional, deep passing offense - St. Louis - during the regular season, and had the same success facing a one-dimensional, short passing offense - Philadelphia - in the NFC championship game. But the Raiders are far more versatile through the air than either the Rams or Eagles, so things may be different here. And it's almost impossible to envision Tampa Bay's impotent ground attack (which would become the weakest ever to win a Super Bowl if the Bucs to prevail) doing anything against Oakland's interior trio of defensive tackles Sam Adams and John Parrella plus rookie middle linebacker Napoleon Harris, a threesome that brings to mind Buffalo's "Bermuda Triangle" of the early 1980s. So it comes down to whether you think Brad Johnson attempting 40 or 45 passes is a plausible success formula.

The view from here is that it isn't - and the sight of Paul Tagliabue presenting a Vince Lombardi Trophy to Al Davis is in and of itself worth the price of admission.

Forget the other questions, just know that I, Ricky the Kid, have selected the Tampa Bay Buccanneers.

Well, I am not a Bucs fan at all. I am a Browns fan, and if anything I am more of a Raider fan than Bucaneer fan, but I am just 100% positive that the winner of the game is who I selected.

The Raiders will be shut down...period.

And the reason it says "Go Bucks!" under my name is because I am an Ohio State BUCKeye fan.
