Default Rugby World Cup -- no, seriously

I know nobody cares about this but me, the Rugby World Cup final is Saturday (1 a.m. EST) and we are talking about the third most-watched sporting event on the planet (after only the Summer Olympics and soccer World Cup).
So, who do you like, England or Australia?
An Aussie win would be their third, and second consecutive, cup win. That's a bit of a surprise to those of us who thought this event would be dominated by New Zealand, which won the inaugural event in 1987. Since then, however, Australia won it in 1991 and 99, with South Africa hoisting the big prize in 1995.
If England wins, it would be not only its first, but the first World Cup victory for a Northern Hemisphere team.
The English were the pre-tournament favorite and Jonny Wilkinson has just been kicking the snot out of the ball. But they are a sentimental pick, as well, with prop Jason Leonard, the only forward to play more than 100 international matches (he's now at 115). Earlier in this year's World Cup, he passed the overall record previously held by French centre Phillippe Sella (I saw him play in the 1994 Five -- now Six -- Nations Tournament at the now-demolished Cardiff Arms Park in Wales. Princess Di was there too, but she was on the other end of the stadium)
In terms a North American can understand, Leonard is the Ray Bourque of international rugby.
I'm sure I've bored everybody by now, but, like I said, this is one of the most important sporting events in the world, so pay attention!

Have you ever been drunk and accidently stumble into a classroom at the beginning of the semester and it takes you like 15 minutes before you realize you're not in the right place?

That's what i felt like in this post.

Or maybe I'm the only one that ever got drunk during the first week of classes...

All right, this post is now 3-for-3 in terms of being filled by SC staff. Dave, Doug Graham, Brad O., step up to the plate, let's see how long we can keep it that way before the interlopers have their way.

Anyway, I started watching Rugby when I lived in Ohio and had a channel (Fox Sports World) that showed a couple of games a week. Great sport. Unfortunaltely, I now live in Delaware, and our cable operator does not carry FSW. But I'm with you in spirit, ESP.

I haven't watched much of the Rugby World Cup... I just haven't picked up Rugby actually. FSW, as Kevin noted, does give us a fair amount of rugby to watch, but I find that they show a ton more Aussie Rules football.

First real bit of Auzzie Rulz I saw was after falling asleep during a Brazilian soccer match. I was dazed already... to wake up to Auzzie Rulz was completely disorienting.

I haven't seen Australia play, though I did catch part of the England-Georgia (as in former Soviet republic) match. Georgia got completely ruined. I think the scoreline I saw was 60-9 or something. So, I'll say England.

Doug, it's your turn.

Being an Australian, I'm naturally excited about this game. I didn't think we could beat the Kiwis, but we pulled that off and I think we can do the same to the Poms. Johnny Wilkinson is the danger man - if we can cut down the chances he gets to use his boot, we will go a long way towards winning.

Well, it appears the consensus is England, based on the replies to this thread, which did considerably better than I thought it would. I find that pretty heartening, because as a former player and current contributing writer to Rugby magazine, I'm used to seeing rugby not get any attention -- during the 1999 RWC, the only coverage in Sports Illustrated was of the incident in which a college women's team flashed their breasts at the Lincoln Memorial.
The final match starts at 8 p.m. tomorrow in Sydney, which actually 4 a.m. Saturday EST. I'm going to try to watch some of it on the Internet because my cable system doesn't get FSW either.
By the way, New Zealand defeated France 40-13, in the third-place match.

Well 3 for England and 1 for the Aussies aint bad, but considering 2 votes for the English were from English posters and the 1 vote for the Aussies was from one of their own lol.

Shame I cannot see the game until wednesday due to crappy fox sports showing it on 72 hour tape delay

Halftime update: England 14, Australia 9.
The Wallabies took a lead on an early try, followed by three penalty kicks by Wilkinson and an England try.

Final score: England 20, Australia 17
Wilkinson hits a drop goal in the 100th minute after Australia's Elton Flatley ties the match with penalty goals at the end of 80-minute regulation and again in the second 10-minute extra period.
