Cool Anthony's Week 1 Picks

5

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

THURSDAY NIGHT

Miami 17 (+4 1/2), PITTSBURGH 6 - Willie Parker's debut as Pittsburgh's feature back figures to be anything but auspicious with Big Ben out and Miami consequently sticking eight guys in the box to stop the run so as to make Charlie Batch beat them. True, the Dolphins have lost seven in a row on artificial turf, but they did cover in a respectable three of them and if they are to fulfill their destiny this year they'll have to be able to snap streaks like this.

SUNDAY

TENNESSEE 27, N.Y. Jets 13 (+3) - The dominant theme this week may be "Until Proven Otherwise": The Jets have lost nine straight on the road by a combined 211-84 - including the five that were on natural grass by a combined 124-33 - so until proven otherwise ...

TAMPA BAY 28, Baltimore 7 (+3) - And the Ravens are even worse on the road than the Jets: They've lost eleven in a row on the NFL highway (the longest current road losing streak) and have been outscored 258-130 doing it. Plus the Bucs finished five games ahead of Baltimore last year and the game's in Tampa - so why is this number so low?

NEW ENGLAND 34, Buffalo 10 (+8) - This figures to be New England's worst season in a half-dozen years, but you'll never know it this week: The Pats have blasted Buffalo five straight times by an aggregate 101 points, and the Bills have dropped their last five on grass by 81.

Atlanta 24 (+4 1/2), CAROLINA 17 - Panthers swept the Falcons last year but had lost nine of ten to Atlanta prior - and it was the Falcons who had The No-Two-Winning-Seasons-in-a-Row Jinx to contend with then; it's Carolina's turn this time around.

CLEVELAND 13, New Orleans 6 (+3) - The worst quarterback in the league takes on the quarterback with the weakest arm in the league. The "under" looks like a safer bet than the Browns.

DETROIT 24 (+3 1/2), Seattle 20 - The Super Bowl Runner-Up Jinx gets off to an ominous start with the Seahawks becoming the eighth such team in a row to follow up their Super Bowl defeat with an opening-day loss seven months later.

Philadelphia 23, HOUSTON 14 (+3 1/2) - When you're hot, you're hot: Donte' Stallworth fell into Philly's lap a week and a half before the season starts and both of their injured veteran power backs (Correll Buckhalter and Thomas Tapeh) made the team. And when you're not, you're not: Figuring they were in good shape at running back with Domanick Davis, the Texans passed on Reggie Bush in the draft, only to see Davis have his season get stillborn by an exhibition-game injury.

ST. LOUIS 31 (+3), Denver 24 - The Broncos may be getting overhyped and the home team has won the last six games in this series after having lost the first four. This looks like a routine opening-day home-underdog selection.

KANSAS CITY 23, Cincinnati 17 (+3) - Herman Edwards did win both of his outings versus the Bengals while he coached the Jets and how far along Carson Palmer is in rehabbing his knee remains debatable. So we'll come down on the home side in one of the opening week's toughest games.

JACKSONVILLE 20, Dallas 13 (+3) - The Jags finally get Dallas at home after the first three meetings were at The Hole-in-the-Roof, which is often a positive angle; and Jacksonville usually wears white at home at the beginning of the season, which would force the Cowboys to wear their dreaded blue jerseys, in which they have lost four of their last five.

Chicago 16, GREEN BAY 10 (+3) - Not convinced that the Bears are here to stay, but they're 6-2-1 against the line in their last nine at Lambeau, where the Packers have lost an uncharacteristic nine of their last ten dating back to December of 2004, with the lone win coming in last year's season finale over a Seattle team that had already wrapped up home field throughout the playoffs.

ARIZONA 27, San Francisco 23 (+7 1/2) - The Cardinals had better be fast learners when it comes to playing under their new retractable roof: They're 1-11 straight up in domes dating back to 1999, since which the 49ers, for their part, are 4-14 indoors. Let the Cards prove themselves before laying numbers like this on them.

N.Y. GIANTS 35 (+3), Indianapolis 31 - The Giants were terrible against the pass last year, but pass defense becomes considerably easier when you know the other team is going to throw on virtually every down - a situation the Colts are now forced into with Edgerrin James gone and his projected successor, James Mungro, on injured reserve.

MONDAY NIGHT

WASHINGTON 20, Minnesota 10 (+5) - Do wish Mark Brunell had shown more in preseason (he in fact neglected to engineer so much as a single field goal in any of his appearances) but didn't the Redskins launch a winning playoff bid at the end of last season just as Brunell started to tail off? Vikings hold little appeal on grass (8-18-1 against the line in their last 27 games) and/or outdoors (9-20-2 spreadwise in their last 31) and have dropped eight of their last ten to Washington straight up.

San Diego 31, OAKLAND 17 (+3) - Weren't they worried about this game getting blacked out in the pivotal Bay Area market? But doubt the Chargers are all that worried about losing to the Raiders, who they have beaten five in a row and covered six straight against.

BEST BETS: TENNESSEE, TAMPA BAY, NEW ENGLAND
