I first read that somewhere thinking it was a joke or rumor.

SI and espn are both going with at this point. Doesn't make it fact, but it's sure big news.

This isn't quite right anymore.

Marino was hired to be the #2 guy in the front office with Rick Speilman taking the GM spot, and reporting to Marino.

The part of this that I find wierd is the fact that Speilman is GM in name only. He appears to be on equal-footing with the coach, an unusual org chart, to say the least. They might have been more honest by calling him a player personnel director or something of that nature. GMs hire and fire coaches, but doesn't look Speilman has that capacity here.

Oh, well. Go, Danny-boy. Keep those Dolphins hovering at the breaking point like you did as a player...

Ouch, Dave.

I wonder if he will ever want to become coach. They asked him today and he declined. He either has aspirations to move higher into ownership or onto the field as a coach. But for now, he's staying put.

Default Dan Marino

Sorry, I've been away from the boards for awhile. Im sure this was asked awhile ago, but, I was just wondering what's your take on Dan Marino being hired as Vice President of Football Operations? Is it just a scheme? will big Dave Wannstead still make all the decision while using Spielman and Marino as puppets? What's your take on Wanntead's coaching extention and Speilman's promotion to General Manager?

personally... I think it sucks. big time. it was good that they stripped Big Dave from all his administration rights on personnel moves, however, I feel he's a bit incumbent for the Dolphins. yeah he's had a winning record, but what has he REALLY done anyways? nothing execpt not making the playoffs and losing in the first round. I think the hiring of Dan Marino was more of a publicity stunt. It was a way of getting more people out to the park knowing that Marino was part of the organization again. I highly doubt he's really going to make any personnel moves, and if he does, watch out! .. Speilman however, looks kind of promising. I'll know what kind of staff we have if Fiedler is still the starting quarterback next year

Its a PR stunt IMHO.

I hope that the Fish will use his name and thats all. He has no experience as a GM... so lets hope thats all it is.

Just be glad he wasn't hired as coach. Too bad, he was great in the studio (at least better than the other bozos on CBS).

I hope Marino works out. Miami needs help in a lot of departments.

And so the Marino-as-executive era ends almost as startlingly as it began.

What a chicken-bleep.

I understand that he may truly want to be home with his family.

I'm a Marino-cynic, so I posit that he chickened out because he suddenly realized how cushy those on-air jobs are, he had NO IDEA how the cap works, or for that matter, how the game works as a whole (he obviously had the passing game down as a player, but there's more than pitch-and-catch to being a front office guy), and that as an exec, he'd be on shaky ground running around doing paid endorsements and advertising and PLAYING GOLF when salary cap meetings, free agent and draft scouting meetings are going on.
And, finally, he recognized that there was no way in hell he was going to be able to beat the Pats while Belichick is coaching there.

Best crawl back into that diamond-encrusted mansion and watch the game from afar, buddy-boy. If you beg a really, really lot, maybe Bill Belichick can teach you a thing or two about how to pick a Super Bowl winner. (He picked Car on HBO, and NE on CBS.)

He changed his mind. I think his kids and family really want him around. Nice to be loved.
