Glory be! Glory be! One of my favorites is back. Midnight Madness took place this past Friday, signifying the return of all that is good: college basketball.

I expect this year to be dominated by the ACC. ESPN likes Wake Forest at #1. Me? Well, if they're healthy, I think the smart money is on North Carolina.

Cruising through the Pac 10 this year? Arizona. Don't have to deal with Mike Montgomery at Stanford anymore. California may have a tough time getting through injuries, especially if Leon Powe can't go. UCLA could be a sleeper. They've got some real talent coming into the program. Ben Howland's impact will be seen on that program this year. Arizona, though, has one of the strongest starting lineups in the country. Even with the loss of Andre Iguodala to the NBA, Wildcats look prime to erase what I've termed last year's "forgettable failure of a season" from memory. Washington is going to good again, too, with Nate Robinson.

Watch for a possible Arizona vs. Wake Forest matchup in the final of the pre-season NIT in November.

UNC will probably be its own worst enemy this year. They have the talent, but they need to come together and play as a team if they want to be successful this year. Williams had fits trying to get this team to play smart basketball and some modicum of team defense last year. If he can get through to these guys and keep McCants in line then the sky is the limit for the Heels this year.

I really like North Carolina this year but they've been so inconsistent. At times they looked like world beaters (the win against UConn, one of my favorite moments from last season) and other times they looked like absolute underachievers (losses to ACC lighweight Clemson and Florida State). Raymond Felton and Rashad McCants could easily be the best guard combo in the country by season's end but they'll need Sean May to dominate inside the paint.

I can see Roy Williams taking the Tar Heels to the Final Four. I can also see them underachieving and missing a great opportunity since it will be a "down" year for Duke.

Losing at Tallahassee last year was nothing to be ashamed of. The 'Noles knocked of UNC, Wake, Maryland, and Ga-Tech at home last season. They appear to be a program on the rise, Dicky V even has them as the 30th best team in the nation going into the season.

Yes, FSU had a good season last year but still North Carolina shouldn't be losing to FSU ever. That's like Penn State losing to Boston College, oh wait...

Well, one could always take solace in the fact that FSU beat Duke before they beat UNC.

I don't like UNC at all, believe me, but their inconsistencies last year stemmed primarily from Sean May's injury troubles. When he's healthy, this team is scary.

A lot of their inconsistencies stemmed around McCants as well. There were some games he looked like the best player in the country and other games where he got benched for dogging it on the court and looking like he did not want to be there. When McCants was dogging it they were relegated to relying on Melvin Scott as their only real outside shooting threat.

Guys, I know I am biased, but Kentucky is going to be downright scary come March. They have two solid starters returning in Hayes and Azubuike, and have three McDonald's All-Americans, plus transfer PG Patrick Sparks who reminds me of Jason Kidd, except he can shoot and combo guard Ramel Bradley from New York, NY (gotta love ballers from the Big Apple).

I just came back from a UK scrimmage and the there are multiple NBA-caliber talents on this team. The most notable is 6-11 Randolph Morris who chose UK over the NBA and is very strong and fundamentally sound. He will be one of the best young big men in the nation, I guarantee it.

UK is definitely the team to beat in the SEC. Gators can keep dreaming on that one.
