Speaking of Zook, he's now the head coach of Illinois. I don't know why a major Big 10 university was so quick to give him a job since he is clearly not a great coach, just a great recruiter (he's college football's Mike Martz, IMO). Puzzling.

That and the fact that probably anybody and everybody can get into Florida while Notre Dame still has higher standards. I also suspect that Florida's deep talent pool probably did not hurt either. This way Meyer has a couple of year's worth of talent while he settles into the area.

But, in the end I am sure the fact that UF came with 2 mil per year and ND's was rumored at 1.25 was the deciding factor when all was said and done.

I wonder if Kevin White keeps his job after this latest fiasco. This is the second straight time he has fired a coach and had trouble finding a replacement. Not to mention the school is taking a big PR hit in the media over firing Willingham.

Because they could use a recruiter in Illinois. They don't need a National Title. Just be competitive. So they need one of the two.

Yep, who knows he may do better at the Illinois where expectations are lower. I think he did get a bit of a raw deal in Gainesville. He was thrown right into the lion's den in the SEC and expected to win right away. At least in Illinois he will get the chance to recruit some talent and build a program. He is inheriting a program that has hit rock bottom so they will be more likely to give him five or six years. Maybe by then he can figure out what it takes to be a successful coach in Division I College Football.

Actually of the big three in the state Florida has by far the highest academic standards. Miami is the school that anybody and everybody can get into since it is a provate school. All felons welcomed.

Ron Turner wasn't a bad coach, Illinois was a consistent bowl participant in the late '90's and early parts of this decade, including the Big Ten championship and Sugar Bowl in 2001. I don't think he was that bad a recruiter either. Just like Michigan and Ohio State have been taking talent out of Western Pennsylvania that Penn State once owned, now schools like Iowa and Purdue are taking Illinois' best players. Ron Zook is a master recruiter and that should begin to change but it's what he does with the talent after he gets it, something he didn't do too well at Florida.

Returning to Notre Dame for a minute, espn.com has this story running.

Count me among those who is happy to see the reaction and what he'd have preferred to have seen happen. Also count me among those to credit him for having the moxy to stand up and say that what happened was wrong, even if he does so in the responsibility vacuum of nearing retirement. Someone has to.

Finally, I like the label "messiah coach." I think I'll steal it.

I had to shake my head when I heard that story. Also, the funny thing is it is beginning to look like they will be lucky to get anybody even remotely close to as good a coach as Willingham is.

OK, let me get this straight.

Notre Dame fired Tyrone Willingham and hired a guy whose highest level of head coaching experience is in high school?

It's not the first time the Irish have done this.
Gerry Faust's coaching experience finished and started in high school.

Weis has one thing on his resume that must have helped: he wins.

However, I don't understand why he got a six year contract. I thought the Irish only gave coaches three years to win.

In fact, if Weis isn't winning in 2008, I fully expect his dismissal at the close of the 2008 season. I don't hate to play the race card, but I won't be the first one playing it if he flounders and the let him continue beyond year three.
