Default Girardi expected to accept Yankees' offer

Source: Girardi expected to accept Yankees' offer

ESPN.com news services

The Yankees officially offered their managerial job to Joe Girardi on Monday morning and he is expected to accept it, a source has told 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand.

"The Yankees have offered Joe the opportunity to become their next manager. Discussions are ongoing," Steve Mandell, Girardi's agent, said.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told Don Mattingly and Tony Pena that they will not be getting the job.

I think this job was his if he wanted it all along. I think it is a good move.

I like him over Mattingly, but it remains to be seen how he will handle it long term. It took him less than a year to have a falling out with ownership in Florida.

Losing Mattingly as a coach weakens the team, however. It is going to be a struggle for Girardi in New York, although he could become a very good manager.

Who do you expect the Yankees to turn to as their bench coach?

I'll post ESPN's FA tracker again this year, unless someone beats me to it. I think the teams have 2 weeks of exclusive negotiations with their players before they reach the open market.

Couldn't have picked a better guy to manage this team. For one thing, Girardi won't sit back and wait for the longball unlike Torre...

Tony Pena maybe? Rumor was Guidry was going to become a fall guy as well.
