Default Breaking News: Roethlisberger Injured In Motorcycle Accident

Quote:
A serious story coming out of Pittsburgh: It appears Super Bowl hero Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was involved in a motorcycle accident about 45 minutes ago (11:30 a.m. ET) in Pittsburgh. Quoth TV station KDKA:

Quote:
According to an eyewitness, he was not wearing a helmet when he flew over the handlebars and hit his head on the windshield of a car. The witness tells KDKA he said his name was Ben and seemed groggy. She says he was bleeding from his head. He has been taken to Mercy Hospital.
The picture on KDKA’s site is rather scary, and there’s no word as of yet on his condition. We will keep you updated, and, of course, will be keeping good thoughts.

This looks quite serious and I hope Big Ben is okay. But no helmet? And he had been warned about this before. Reminds me of the Jay Williams situation.

This is on every news station in Pittsburgh right now.

Roethlisberger is a good guy and I just hope he will rebound from this.

They are saying on the news that he is in surgery, but during the press conference the doctors didn't give any specifics on what type of surgery. They did say though that Roethlisberger was able to communicate with them and knew what had happened.

Up here, and this is nothing like reliable, they're reporting (I don't know whose reporting they're stealing up here, I'll assume it's ESPN's) that he had a 9" gash in the back of his head, lost most of his teeth, broke his jaw, fractured a bone in his sinus area and injured both of his knees.

Pennsylvania stupidly repealed the motorcycle helmet law shortly after Big Ben was drafted. Everybody with a brain and an interest told Ben that cycling around helmet-less was stupid. But, he wanted to do it, and did.

It sounds like he needed to have seen pre-crash versions back to back with post-crash versions of Gary Busey, but it's too late now.

Personally, I'm glad he's alive.
As a Steelers fan, I'm glad that he won us one Super Bowl, and I'm sad that he may not ever do so again. (My uncle once wrecked one of his knees in a motorcycle accident; he used a cane to walk for three years. Sure, medicine is better now, but... both knees? Call me a pessimist for worrying that his football career is over.)

I remember Roethlisberger being specifically mentioned after Kellen Winslow's accident last year. I pray he comes out of this OK. That said, he should have been smarter and worn the helmet.

Nope. No helmet.

Right now reports say that he broke his jaw and nose. Also, he has like a nine inch gash in the back of his head and lost/chipped a few teeth. None of the press conferences so far confirm that, but that is what most media sources are reporting.

So the good news is that the crash isn't life threatening and does not appear to even be career threatening. You have to feel for a twenty year old who has to have like reconstructive surgery on his face. That is tough. They said the surgery today took 7 hours and things went well.

Man, this is like deja vu. Kellen Winslow Jr., Jay Williams...when will these guys learn? I heard that Terry Bradshaw lectured Ben on riding his bike during a practice last year. Bradshaw's advice at the time was, "ride when you're retired." Ben is strictly a class guy. I hope he gets better. The game of football would be hurting without him in it.

hopefully he recovers 100%. that said, what a moron - how could you ride w/ no helmet as an NFL quarterback??? I'll never understand that. Here in Hawaii we have a seatbelt law, but a NO HELMET law... go figure???
hopefully he learns from this and wears a helmet from now on.

My brother is one of these libertarian, "Let Those Who Ride Decide" people. Wonder what he thinks about this?

Hopefully Big Ben will be all right - but when motorcycles are involved, you just never know.

But the AFC North appears to be turning upside down: First Carson Palmer, then the Ravens getting McNair, and now this.

Of course the Browns - and Charlie Frye - are also in this division, but let's not dwell on the ridiculous.

I'm all for letting people choose. I dont mind the helmet law so much (cuz I dont ride), but I hate the seatbelt law. I dont like the fact that the government say you have to wear it. I wear mine all the time, but I dont like being told to do so. I think if people are dumb enough to not wear it (or a helmet) them, so be it.

Hope he recovers. There goes the chance of a repeat. Even if he does make a recovery I see no way he could play and play effectivly this year. Wonder how bad his knees are injured to me that is the scariest thing in this given his profession.
