Default Yankees to Offer ARod Record Contract

Much to no one's surprise, the Yankees will not let ARod leave without putting up a good fight. Here is a story:

Looks as is ARod is opting out of his contract, and if the Yankees are true to their word that they will not negotiate if he opts out, then it loks like ARod is not going to be in pinstripes anymore.

I guess not, but who knows. The Yankees will be in trouble at 3B without him, although they could always go after Lowell and not miss much.

A-Rod's not going back to NY. The most logical destinations are the LA clubs. Whether one will pony up $30 million/year we shall see.

It will be interesting to see if he gets the 30+ mil Boras thinks he can get him. At some point doesn't a team owner have to sit back and question whether that kind of price tag is worth it for a guy who has yet to deliver a team a pennant let alone a ring and whose teams are a mere 3-7 in the postseason and who has minimal leadership skills and does nothing to upgrade the chemistry in the clubhouse.

A-Rod won't be back. He could be going to Boston or the Chicago cubs I hope.

You know what would be funny... If Texas offered ARod another huge contract and let's see if ARod bites again.

I just love how it is being reported that Boras was not even willing to give the Yanks the time of day unless the package they offered was going to be worth at least $350 mil. I am just not convinced he is going to get that much or is even worth it.

I think this is just more of Boras being Boras. No one is worth that sort of money. I think I'm in the wrong business. I should be a sports agent.

Yeah, that is just crazy. He is a great player and prob the best in the big leagues but you could get a few good players for his price tag and do more with them.
If he went back to a team like Texas he would be the only threat in that line up (I don't count Sosa as a threat) and all you would have to do is walk him. You couldn't walk him in NY because that line up was so loaded.
I don't know, but I think he may of screwed himself - the Yankees were gonna offer him a good deal on top of what he already had coming to him. Who else would cough up that kind of money?
I don't think (I hope!!) Boston would?

I think A-Rod is worth the money, it's just that teams have to have the desire to continue after getting ARod. Which is really tough to do. Because if you come up short, then you wind up losing money in the end.

But in terms of just ARods value? I mean, if you told me, in an isolated spot, that ARod was worth 30-35 million I would believe it, because it makes sense. You make money off of ARod, the question is really, you still have to get more talent because ARod alone won't make them a winner. And most teams just don't have the willpower to do that, I think.

I think a couple good spots...San Fran, Detroit, Atlanta. All these teams because they have good young pitching. They wouldn't have to go out of their way to expand payroll and get into bad pitching contracts. None of these teams would be pressed financially, ARod would pay for himself, and there would be a good shot of winning a Championship already in there.

Atlanta does not really have good young pitching per se. After Hudson and Smoltz there really is not much to be excited about there. Besides if they get A-Rod what do they do with Chipper or Escobar? Atlanta has never shown any interest in spending that kind of cash on someone and if they were to go get him you can count on Texiera not being a Brave after next season. Besides, the Brave offense is fine they were 9th in baseball in runs scored last season and only 12 behind the Angels who scored the 6th most runs. They need more depth in the rotation as their starters were only 13th in ERA.

The big thing about giving a guy like A-Rod that kind of money is you are setting yourself up to pay the luxury tax if you want to compete and not many teams can afford to pay the amount of money the Yanks have been paying out in luxury tax charges the past few years.

While you potentially make cash off of having A-Rod on your team the big question is do you think you will be able to win a championship with A-Rod on your roster. He seems to bring a bit of drama with him to the clubhouse and he has not exactly shown he can step it up and help lead a team to the promised land. You look at how guys like Pujols, Papi, Man-Ram, and Pudge have lead teams to multiple WS appearances since the Yanks last won one you have to wonder if it is worth it to spend that kind of money who does elevate a team to the next level when their are guys out there who make far less that help elevate teams to that level.

I probably spoke a bit quickly about Atlanta and good pitching, because their current pitching is not good, but with them it's more of they bring pitching up through the minor leagues and I think they'll be back to that, if not next year, sometime down the line. At some point, they'll have a good, cheap, pitching staff.

As well, the other thing with the Braves is TBS. I know they are cutting back on the games there, but even half of the Braves games on TV would bring in good ratings with ARod and he'd pretty much pay for himself through the TV deal, if they see a bump for their playoff coverage, even better.

Acutally, the way I understand it is that TBS is re-branding itself as more of a national cable channel and are looking at airing a broader spectrum of MLB games and not exclusively be a Braves affiliate. I believe the Braves are switching over to FSN for their cable games.

But regardless of that the Braves as always been run as a profitable business first and foremost and a sports franchise second.

Well, it certainly changes things if they're phasing out Braves baseball that much, I didn't realize it was that sharp.

Either way, I find it interesting that Boras and ARod aren't taking a whole lot of heat. It makes sense because we know so much about the value of baseball right now and teams can't really get away with the "we can't afford a guy" line.
