Default Woods: "It's the right thing to do"

Woods: "It's the right thing to do"

Associated Press

ATLANTA -- Tiger Woods expects Augusta National to have a female member by the next Masters because ''it's the right thing to do,'' and he believes golf won't be hurt by the controversy.

''It's an organization's membership,'' Woods said Tuesday at the season-ending Tour Championship. ''It's not the players' fault it's happening.''

While the PGA Tour season officially ends Sunday, the debate over the all-male membership at Augusta National doesn't figure to wane.

It began in July, when club chairman Hootie Johnson issued a scathing, three-page statement that he would not let a national women's group force him to admit a female.

Since then, Johnson has dropped corporate television sponsors, while the head of the National Council of Women's Organizations has put pressure on prominent Augusta National members.

Martha Burk also said this week she wanted PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem to take a stand by no longer counting the Masters as an official event.

Asked if the controversy would reflect poorly on golf if it is not resolved by the Masters in April, Woods said, ''I'm sure Hootie will probably have a female member by then.''

The club has not issued a comment since Johnson said in late August he was dropping TV sponsors to keep them out of the fray.

''It's the right thing to do,'' Woods said. ''He would have done it anyway over time. He might be forced to have to do it, which is a shame because it's not how you want to do things. I'm sure he would have done it the right way, but now it's not going to be a good situation.''

I say, "SHUT UP WOMEN'S GROUPS."

Agusta won't change their policy any time soon (e.g.: before either the PGA season or the second week of April).

Martha Burk needs to shut up. At first she was saying how she was just trying to get people to consider a woman member. Now she tried to jam her ideas down the throats of Augusta National, the PGA, the players, the sponsers, NBC... it's absurd. IT"S A PRIVILEGE TO PLAY AT AUGUSTA. There's no ban against women; it's just how the club has expanded over the years. What Martha Burk is doing is only going to bring unnecessary heat upon golf and its players.

I just want to know how certain women's groups would feel about male membership? How about the man who wants to be in sychronized swimming but is not allowed because he is not female? Where is his justice? Just one more case of small interest groups wielding the PC stick, and the population at large forgetting we have the guns and letting the stick carriers hi-jack our freedoms and send us toward the inky black void of indifference.

No kidding -- women's rights group are way out of hand. They are now equal >>AS IT SHOULD BE<< and they should F-OFF already.

A woman will never be a professiona football player.
A man will never be a synchronized swimmer.
Live with it.

Hehe, good comparison.

I agree that Agusta doesn't need to change it's rules. But did you see how much bias was in the poll that they put out?

People won't stop buying Ford trucks because of this... and people won't stop paying attention to <insert co. name here> just because its ex, 105-year old CEO is a member at Agusta. This is a stupid issue.

Defiant Johnson says Masters will go on no matter what

Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Defiant as ever, Augusta National chairman Hootie Johnson declared that The Masters will be played next year, no matter what, and there is no chance a woman will be a member of the golf club by then.

''We will prevail because we're right,'' the 71-year-old Johnson said. His comments were the first on the subject since he fueled the debate over the all-male membership at Augusta National by criticizing Martha Burk and the National Council of Women's Organizations for trying to coerce change.

The club has never had a female member in its 69-year history, and Johnson didn't sound as if he was in any hurry to change that.

''We have no timetable on the woman member,'' he said in a Nov. 4 interview with The Associated Press. ''Our club has enjoyed a camaraderie and a closeness that's served us well for so long, that it makes it difficult for us to consider change.

''A woman may be a member of this club one day, but that is out in the future.''

This is getting interesting, one of the members gave up his membership because of this issue:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...ugusta_women_1

I thought this issue would die down naturally but the pressue is starting to pile on.

Unrelated... didja hear how Woods' caddy threw a fan's camera into the lake after he took a pitcher that disrupted Woods' put?

No, onto a RELATED matter... Martha Burk can shove it.

Indvidual players should boycott the entire PGA Tourp!??? This woman is nuts.

Full Story on ESPN.com

First of all, the PGA has had the LPGA Tour around for a long, long time.

Secondly, nothing is stopping women from qualifying for PGA Tour events. In fact, Suzy Whaley qualified for the Greater Hartford Open (played in August -- same week as British Open) in September and has decided that she will play in the event.

If there's a Mr. Burk, I'd strangle the Mrs. :redhot:

Now, granted, he's mostly a humor columnist, but has anyone read Bill Simmon's column on this issue? I think it fits it to a T.

Sometimes, guys just like to hang out with other guys. Martha Burk may not like it, but that's the way it is. Deal with it.
