Default Series 8: St. Louis (4) vs. Chicago (5)

The Blues haven't been to the finals since 1972, despite qualifying for the playoffs in each of the past 23 seasons. Meanwhile, the Hawks haven't won a cup in over 35 years -- the longest such streak in the NHL.

Who's quest for Lord Stanley's Mug will end here? Discuss it in this thread.

Well I don't know if St. Louis is more experienced or not. The Hawks have a lot of veterans also.

One thing the Blues definitely do NOT have experience in -- playoff experience, at least -- is in goaltending. Turek was pulled the last game and a half of last season's run (? -- I think that's how I remember it) and Johnson played the rest. However, he's injured right now (not serious I don't think) and Fred Brathwaite has also been sharing the goalie duties in St. Louis, but has absolutely zero playoff experience.

The Blues needed to win the Hasek sweepstakes to compete this year. They got Weight back, not to mention possibly the best two power forwards -- Tkachuk and Demitra -- on the wings... and, two of the top 5 d-men in the league, MacInnis and Pronger. Nevertheless, without goaltending, you go nowhere, and the Blues just don't have it.

Hawks in 6.

Hawks I guess. Goaltending is always a factor.

Hawks. Thibault/Passmore. That's all.

Thumbs up Lee's Bottom Line

LEE'S BOTTOM LINE

Here's a sneak peak of tomorrow's NHL preview article that will appear on the SC mainsite (please forgive me -- not proofread just yet )

Western Quarter Final: (4) St. Louis Blues vs. (5) Chicago Blackhawks

The St. Louis Blues are in the playoffs for a professional sporting record 23rd year in a row, but they haven't even played in the Stanley Cup Finals since 1972. They're #4 seed is surprising. After trading up #1 goalie Roman Turek to Calgary in the offseason, they put their hopes in between the pipes in Brent Johnson, with Fred Brathwaite as the back-up. Combined with decent depth at the skating positions, the Blues were able to clinch home ice on the strength of 8 wins by Brathwaite and 34 wins by Johnson. However, Johnson has little playoff experience, and it will cost him. The Blackhawks, unlike most teams this season, have been playing steady all season long, and nothing should change in the playoffs.

Bottom Line: This should be a great series, but Chicago will come out on top as the upsets continue to pile up against the Blues. Blackhawks in 7.

Hey, who got the game winner? Karpotsev??

He only had 1 goal in the entire season, and even that was in the first WEEK of the season!!... so he got the GWG tonight, PLUS 5 blocked shots!! Great game for him.

And yes, the goalies played awesome. Both had some really great saves, but I think Thibault will be better in the end.

Thibault has more ability than Johnson in my opinion.

Thibault played real well. Thirty four saves right?

Karpotsev's goal went off Johnson's glove I think.

Johnson played a lil better than Thibault today, and Weight scored his first goal since his injury, and the Blues tied up the series 1-1 on a 2-0 win.

Not bad for a series I thought would be boring.

The Blues dominated in a 4-0 victory yesterday. Johnson now has over 140 minutes of shutout hockey . . . guess it's time for all of us Johnson-doubters to shut up
