Default Programs On The Decline?

….here are four, in no particular order, according to Athlon Sports (summarizing/paraphrasing their reasonings):

Arkansas – since getting blown out by Georgia in the 2002 SEC Championship game, the Razorbacks “have struggled to qualify for mid-level bowl games and haven’t been much of a factor in the SEC West race”’; also lack experience at QB; Houston Nutt almost left before (Pedersen offered him the Nebraska job, then acted like he didn't...lol...), not reliable.

Indiana – 10 consecutive losing seasons; hasn’t appeared in the Rose Bowl in 37 years; DiNardo out, Hoeppner in; DiNardo lost 27 of 35 games, went 3-8 last season; only 28,400 fans attended on average last year, lowest in decades.

Kansas State – no experience at RB or QB; defense allowed 31 ppg last season and turned ball over 24 times; projected to finish near bottom of Big XII North; Bill Snyder on the hot seat.

Maryland – regressed by finishing 5-6 last year and ranked as one of worst offensive teams in country, after winning 2001 ACC Championship and three straight bowl games; inexperience at QB; leading RB Josh Allen tore knee ligaments, out for season.

Comments?

…and does South Carolina count? LOL….

Good list, except for the Indiana mention. I mean, how can you be on the decline when you've already hit rock-bottom? You have to include Kentucky with them (much to my chagrin), as well, althoug they did go 6-5 and went to the Outback Bowl in '99, IIRC.

...how about Arizona?

They've been in a slide for a few years now....how's their recruiting going? They got anything to build on?

Baylor?

LOL

It seems to me the boys at Athlon were bored and threw stuff on the wall to see what stuck. Indiana? I mean don't you actually have to have had several winning seasons to be considered a team on the decline. Seriously, when you have had 10 consecutive losing seasons is there really anywhere to go but up?

Arkansas really has not been a consistent top 25 program for several years now.

Can we throw Nebraska on there?

And while I agree that K-State is declining, I'd have to aruge the point that Snyder's job is on the line. The guy is going to need a lot more than one bad season to get fired.

IMO, Nebraska has one more year to prove it DOESN'T belong on this list. Mebbe two.

Callahan has gotten a pass for last season because he didn't have the right personnel for his system. He's got that now. If he fails with this talent base he's recruited, I would say absolutely, add the Huskers to the list. Because then it would seriously be a rebuilding process.

I actually put Arizona in the Programs on the Rise thread. They haven't made a bowl since 1998, when they beat Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl . They'll be back in a bowl soon, though.

They were baaad the past few years, mostly because of hiring that clown John Mackovic. Mike Stoops has them on the rise, though.

They've got a great recruiting class, and two phenomenal sophomore corners in Wilrey Fontenot and Antoine Cason. Redshirt freshman linebacker Ronnie Palmer is a monster, and should have an immediate impact. Freshman QB Willie Tuitama is going to be a stud.

Tim Couch's senior season, lost to Penn State in the Outback Bowl.

Here's one more name to throw out there- Washington State.

YES. Wazzu ran off a few 10+ win seasons in 2000-2002. Last year they were weak, and this year they'll be fighting to stay out of the Pac-10 basement.

You can probably add Colorado to that list.

You know how sad Kentucky football has been? We lost our last coach ... TO BAYLOR. Sigh. I do think we are moving in the right direction with Joker Phillips as the offensive coordinator, thankfully. We were one of the worst D-1 offenses in the NCAA last year.

Jay...

Colorado? No way man. The Buffs posted an 8-5 mark despite the s&*^ hitting the fan last season. Barnett may be an SOB, but the kids respond to him. I've got Colorado giving Miami all they can handle this season.

Bill Doba might not be the coach for Washington State, but he did have injuries in his second year, particularly at RB and QB.

I guess you could put Missouri in here too, but I'm inclined to believe that their coach is the main problem.

And before Beane comes in here and blasts me for defending Missouri and Washington State due to bias, I'll freely point out the fact both schools' qbs are from Youngstown. See KB, beat ya to it.

Buck, do you only support Colorado since they finished with a very simular season as OHIO ST?

M GO BLUE!

I am stationed in WASH ST (14 years), ....those plow-boys can't play either!

I'd support Colorado because they were one game away from playing in a Major Bowl last season and have been picked to win the Big 12 North this season.
