Post Greg Oden

Greg oden is the #1 prospect in hs. He could go pro right now. Why would he go to college?

Because he has to. It is in the New CBA you have to attend college for at least 1 year that is the reason.

Yeah, the new CBA prohibits anyone younger than 19 from going pro. Besides that Oden seems to be cut from a slightly different cloth than most. Even before the new age limit came down he had always maintained that he wanted to go to school before going pro. He is a kid that seems to understand the value of going to school and gaining a certain level of maturity and experience before going pro.

Doublee you may be right but keep in mind that Amare verballed to Memphis a few years ago before he declared for the NBA. So you never know he could have had a change of heart once he knew the situation and the money he would be stepping into.

Why? For a free education? To mature as a person and intellectually? It's not like college is without its benefits. Most of these high-schoolers bomb in the NBA, and then they're left with no education to fall back on.

I don't know how familiar you are with Amare's story but if he had gone through with going to college he, in all likelihood, was not going to be eligible. He had to sit out his senior year in high school due to a shady school official at Mt. Zion in Durham. Once the time had come to decide whether to go pro or not he was tired of trying to clear his name that he just went pro.

I wasn't aware of this thanks for that info Doublee. So maybe Oden would have gone to college but I don't know that money may be to hard to pass up unless his folks are already pretty well off.

Yeah, it raised a big stink here when it happened and HBO's Real Sports did a piece about it a couple of years ago. Basically, Amare had come to Durham to play for Mt. Zion, the same school that produced Tracy McGrady, but he got homesick after one season and wanted to move back home to Florida to play his senior season. In a nutshell the coach at Zion got rather pissed about this so he altered Amare's transcripts to show he had failed some classes at Zion which would have made him ineligible at the school he was transferring to. We all know how the NCAA can be once the validity of transcripts and test scores are called into question. It basically takes an act of God to obtain freshman eligibility at that stage.

WOW. Is that coach still employed my guess would be no. That is terrible that is taking it too far. How can he jeporadize a kid's future like that so do you think he would have went to memphis if this didn't all happen.

I doubt it, from what I remember he was being touted as someone who was going to be the second big man taken behind Yao going into his senior season at HS and was a lock for the top 5. I always got the sense that the only reason he was considering college as an option was over the fear of slipping out of the lottery due to not having played his senior year. He was likely a one-and-done guy if he had gone to Memphis.

From what I remember the coach was canned once the fit hit the shan and the lawsuits started rolling in. The thing is that Mt. Zion is a private school that had eyes on becoming the next Oak Hill and were trying to capitalize on being the school that McGrady went to and Amare was going to be the crown jewel of the program for two years.

The thing is Amare did fall out of the top 5 though. So maybe a year in school would have made him number 1.

Well, I seriously doubt the Cavs would have taken him over LeBron but he probably could have gone number two, but as I said earlier there was a pretty good chance the NCAA was going to make him sit out another year and he didn't want to risk having to sit out two consecutive years.

Yea true about Lebron. For some reason I was thinking he was the year before Kwame but I looked it up he was the year after. That is why i thought he could go number 1. Anyway thanks for all the insight on Amare Doublee are you a big fan of his or do you know all this because you live in the area.

Mostly because I live in the area and happened to catch the feature that Real Sports did on him.
