Default Lost Rivalries...

Rivals.com has done a story on discontinued rivalries and the ones we miss the most. Their Top 5...

1. Miami-Florida
2. Oklahoma-Nebraska
3. Penn State-Pitt
4. Arkansas-Texas
5. North Carolina-South Carolina

http://collegefootball.rivals.com/co...asp?CID=686909

I'd have to go with Oklahoma-Nebraska. It's a shame the Big Twelve didn't include a provision making those two play every single year.

As much as I hate to say it, UF was responsible for discontinuing the Miami rivalry.

I think Arkansas and Texas is a notch better the Oklahoma/ Nebraska.

Spoken like a true Confederate...

-Calling Miami-UF a "rivalry."

-Ark-Texas better than Oklahoma-Neb.

What's the exact story on UF discontinuing the Miami game (I'm sorry...I can't call that a rivalry)?

Simple Miami got to damn good. SOS decided not to continue it.

Quote:
Florida coach Steve Spurrier was responsible for the short-lived plans to resume the series. When he took the job last December, he said he believed the Gators and Hurricanes should play and that school officials were willing to go along. The 92 and 93 games already were planned, but school officials were willing to plan an annual series with Miami beginning in 1996.

That was until the SEC expanded its slate once again.

"Although I'm sorry it had to come to this, we need to do what is best for our total athletic program," Spurrier said. "And we must play eight SEC games, six games each year at home and the Georgia game in Jacksonville. We still want to play Miami and I hope we can work it out in a bowl game or a 12th game."

That's the spin anyways.

Yeah...I checked the records. You guys went 3-7 in the final 10 meetings of the series before it got axed.

No way. In its heyday, Oklahoma-Nebraska was right there with Michigan-Ohio State in deciding national championships. Arkansas-Texas is/was a nice regional rivalry that had national title implications on a far less frequent basis than Oklahoma-Nebraska.

EXACTLY.

But southern/new school bias are the rule of the day.

Miami and Florida could play another half century with Oklahoma-Nebraska dormant and only then equal the prestige/importance of those two schools.

I never said UF/UM was a national rivalry or even a decent rivalry. Just that UF was the one's who pulled the plug.

They should research this a little better as the Gamecocks are slated to come to Chapel Hill October 13th in what should be an interesting matchup.

Back in the 70s and early 80s OU/Nebraska was arguably the biggest rivalry in college football and almost always determined who was going to the Orange Bowl that year.

I'm not blaming you for the southern bias either mush. Just statin' it...once again...for the record.

You're only evil by assocation.

doublee...

But the rivalry (UNC-USC) isn't continious anymore. UF plays Miami in 2008 and 09 but they ain't goin' back to a yearly battle. That's what they mean. Oklahoma still plays Nebraska on occassion. They just don't do it every season.
