Default Baseball's version of the Rams?

Complete Story

The Rangers have been quite busy, one of the busiest teams this offseason outside of the Big Apple. This is quite a lineup, and this article brings up an intriguing theory. Could the Rangers win by outscoring their opponents?
Quote:
Rangers could become baseball's version of NFL's Rams

ARLINGTON, Texas - Juan Gonzalez is what the pitching-poor Texas Rangers really didn't need: another slugger.

But maybe adding him to a lineup that includes Alex Rodriguez, Ivan Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro and Carl Everett could make the Rangers the baseball version of the NFL's St. Louis Rams.

As in, they'll try to outscore everyone.

"The name of the game is runs scored and Juan Gonzalez is certainly going to add to an already potent offensive club," general manager John Hart said Wednesday.

"I think this certainly bodes well for us winning additional games and being ever closer to being a contending, championship-type club."

Since becoming the Rangers general manager on Nov. 1, Hart talked about improving the Rangers' pitching - and he did sign free agent Chan Ho Park and add relievers John Rocker, Jay Powell and Todd Van Poppel.

I think the Rangers ownership realizes that fans come out to see offense. They have certainly built a team to score lots of runs. As I've said, I see them losing lots of 10-8 games this season.

Hart may not be as dumb as looks (by bringing in Everett, Gonzales, and Rocker - as well as the others). Gonzales will help both this year and next and with his age and his known aversion to high pressure playing situations (New York) he may be fairly easily resignable after his 2 year deal expires. Secondly, Ivan Rodriguez will almost certainly be traded by season's end (the Rangers would rather trade him for something and have him walk and just get a draft pick after the season. Also, they landed this year's top free agent pitcher, Park, who is really better suited to be the #2 or #3 pitcher on a staff. Hart has also solidified what is now a very good bullpen. Look what the Yankees were able to do with no starting pitching and a solid bullpen and a huge lineup in '96. Next year there will be a lot more (better) pitchers available on the market. Hart can go after them and if his boss (Tom Hicks) has patience they could be a contender in '03 - just probably not this year.

Good points, Peter. I guess you have to come to the realization that with the salary cap and free agency in sports nowdays, it's nearly impossible to put together a complete, perfect team with no weaknesses. You have to give and take... in the Rangers' case, they are building up their offense while their pitching is marginal, at best.

Park may be a good pitcher, but he is overpaid with his current contract. However, Hart's been steadily improving his pitching with the deal involving Mario Ramos and Carlos Pena. Pena didn't have a place to play with Rafael Palmeiro in the way, and Ramos could improve the pitching staff a great deal. I like the deals the Rangers are making, improving the offense at a faster pace, but also overhauling the staff at a slower pace. Too bad they're in the strongest division in baseball...

Rangers offense will be the most awesome in baseball in 2002. Juan Gonzalez, Alex Rodriquez, Rafael Palmeiro, Carl Everett and Ivan Rodriquez-its like a Who's Who's

Who needs pitching with a lineup like this Texas 20 New York Yankees 9 lol:goof:

What? -- you think Clemens/Wells/Pettite/Musinna + Rivera will give up 20 runs? -- even against teams like Texas?? Me don't think so -- pitching wins games.

that said..... Texas is "average" on pitching and is definitely a contender this upcoming year.

I don't think Rocker and Everett make the best combination.
