Duncan claimed NBA official Joey Crawford has a "personal vendetta against me," although Crawford said Duncan referred to him with an expletive.

The end result: A long-tenured NBA referee who has officiated 266 career playoff games and 38 NBA Finals games has been suspended for the rest of the season.
I don't know about all that. In listening to some of Stern's comments it sounds as though this is not the first time something has been said to Crawford about how he calls a game. To me it sounds as though this suspension was the result of an accumulation of transgressions and Crawford's unwillingness to accommodate the league's request that he ease up a bit on the techs.

And, Duncan did get fined for verbally abusing an official after he was ejected from the game.

But, if you take Tim Duncan out of the equation and replace him with a player like Carmelo Anthony or Rasheed Wallace, Joey Crawford would still be officiating playoff games this spring.

And the fine to Tim Duncan came after Crawford's suspension, and was simply something the league had to do in order to save face in the situation.

But see the problem with that notion is that we both know that guys like Rasheed or 'Melo would have gone ballistic from the sidelines after the first T and would have warranted being run at that stage.

To be honest I think there is a bit of grandstanding going on by Stern here as well. He seems to have seized on the notion that Crawford seems intent on resigning so he is just rolling him under the bus to show that he will stand up for the players when the time comes.
