Cool Anthony's Week 11 Picks

7

Last week: 6-10. Season totals: 70-68-6, Pct. .507. Best Bets: 10-16-4, Pct. .400.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

Chicago 23, N.Y. JETS 13 (+5 1/2) - Bears go for two victories at Club Med in as many weeks and should get it with the Jets swinging through the realms of letdown land after their first win over New England in eight tries.

PHILADELPHIA 34, Tennessee 10 (+13) - This should be fun: The top-ranked offense in the NFL facing the league's bottom-ranked defense. The Titans ought to be relieved that Mike Martz or Steve Spurrier isn't the head coach of the Eagles.

CAROLINA 31, St. Louis 17 (+7) - If the 5-4 Panthers appear "overpriced" in this spot taking on the 4-5 Rams, maybe the fact that they can't seem to give St. Louis enough points on grass (6-17-1 against the line in the last 24 such games) and/or outdoors (11-23-1 spreadwise in the last 35) has something to do with that.

Washington 23 (+3), TAMPA BAY 16 - Clinton Portis is done for the year and Mark Brunell has (mercifully) been benched; but if Tony Romo, who wasn't even drafted coming out of college, can win his first NFL start on the road, then why can't Jason Campbell, who was a first-round pick, do likewise? And Campbell just has to be better than Bruce Gradkowski, and anytime you can get the team with more talent at quarterback as an underdog, it's a difficult opportunity to pass up.

MIAMI 20, Minnesota 7 (+3) - What can I say? The Dolphins own November and December under Nick Saban! Plus the home team owns a five-game winning streak in this series, while the Vikings own a rich collection of offensive injuries and a long-term covering record on natural grass and outdoors which closely resembles that of the Rams.

Pittsburgh 21, CLEVELAND 13 (+3) - The Steelers are 0-4 both ways on the road this year, but they're 5-0 both ways in their last five games against the Browns, outscoring them by 86 points in that quintet.

BALTIMORE 27, Atlanta 7 (+4) - The Vatican is once again debating the merits of permitting married men to become priests at some time in the future; well they'll allow men in same-sex marriages into the priesthood before Michael Vick ever becomes a serviceable passer in this league! And with the Falcons having burned the money on eight consecutive occasions when clashing with The Former Modell Franchise and being called upon to step outside and into the elements, this one could get real ugly real early.

GREEN BAY 20 (+6), New England 17 - It had to happen sooner or later: All the players that the Patriots have shown the door over the past couple of years has finally reached a critical mass; and this could be nostalgia time for Brett Favre, with light snow and temperatures in the mid-30s on tap for kickoff time Sunday. Upset special.

NEW ORLEANS 30, Cincinnati 21 (+3) - Losing by a TD to the defending Super Bowl champions, on the road, in a cold-weather, late-time-slot game when you play your home games in a dome, is nothing to be ashamed of. Blwoing a 21-point halftime lead at home to a warm-weather team playing in cold weather is another matter entirely.

KANSAS CITY 14, Oakland 10 (+9 1/2) - The Chiefs have won six straight over the Raiders but the home team didn't cover in any of them; and while Aaron Brooks couldn't possibly be coming back soon enough, might Trent Green be returning a bit too soon?

Buffalo 16 (+1), HOUSTON 13 - Like the Jets, the Texans have letdown issues this week and the Bills are probably showing a bit more overall at this point; and with no threat of rain in the long-range forecast, the retractable roof figures to remain open, so you shouldn't have to worry about whether Buffalo can cover back-to-back games indoors. Finally, David Carr is questionable due to a bruised left shoulder, and even J.P. Losman would rate a huge talent edge over the dreadful Sage Rosenfels if Carr can't play.

Detroit 24 (+1), ARIZONA 17 - The home team has won six straight in this one - but hadn't it won nine in a row between the Cardinals and Dallas until last week? When a team has absolutely no will to win, all the trends in the world won't save them.

Seattle 23, SAN FRANCISCO 10 (+4 1/2) - In five games this year against teams with losing records the 49ers are 4-1 straight up and 5-0 against the spread; in their four games versus over-.500 opposition they're 0-4 both ways and have been outscored 168 to 53. Do I detect a pattern here?

Indianapolis 27 (P), DALLAS 20 - For a 9-0 team the Colts aren't getting a whole lot of respect, as this is the third time in the last four weeks they haven't been favored; and until conclusively determined otherwise, how can you not go with Peyton Manning over Tony Romo without having to lay any wood?

DENVER 28, San Diego 14 (+3) - If the Chargers fall behind by three scores at the half this week, rest assured that they won't win; but then again, expecting them not to win in Denver is hardly a dangerous assumption to leap to: They've dropped their last six games up there in fact.

MONDAY NIGHT

JACKSONVILLE 24, N.Y. Giants 13 (+3 1/2) - The injuries are starting to mount for the Giants, and Jack Del Rio might come to his senses and reinsert Byron Leftwich at quarterback; and the Jaguars did win and cover the week after both of their losses to the Texans two years ago, as well as doing both following their first loss to Houston this year.

BEST BETS: MIAMI, BALTIMORE, DENVER

The Jeff Boswell Show continues: He is already assured of the win for Week 11 no matter what happens tonight - and The Pirate Bob, who seems to like that #1 post position, has followed up his Week 10 victory from that slot with a strong, already-assured second-place finish on the rail. The trifecta will be completed by none other than The Dude if Jacksonville covers, while a Giants cover gives Bran the show spot.

Complete details after the game, as always.

Jeff is the man. You all should read his weekly predictions for more insight: https://www.sports-central.org/sports/nfl

And Anthony, so much for that upset special. I only wish you were right about the Packers game!

You mean to tell me that someone actually reads my picks?

And I've got another "Upset Special" on the agenda for this coming week.
