Cool Anthony's Week 14 Picks

4

Last week: 6-9-1. Season totals: 93-90-9, Pct. .508. Best Bets: 17-18-4, Pct. .487.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

THURSDAY NIGHT

PITTSBURGH 16, Cleveland 3 (+7 1/2) - That was quite a comeback orchestrated by Derek Anderson last week - but that was at home, and it tends to be a horse of a different color when quarterbacks like this are wearing a jersey of a different color. Could the Steel Curtain be denied a shutout on a last-second field goal twice in the space of four days?

SUNDAY

CAROLINA 24, N.Y. Giants 17 (+3) - Not much between these two floundering teams at the moment, but I suppose it's better to be coming home following a tough loss on the road than having to go on the road coming off a tough loss at home, and the Panthers have won all three prior games in the series by double digits.

N.Y. JETS 27, Buffalo 21 (+3 1/2) - Why are the Jets such a "surprise team" this year when you consider the fact that the last time they got 16 healthy games out of Chad Pennington they finished 10-6 and went to the Elite Eight? Jets won the first meeting 28-20 at Buffalo but J.P. Losman has moved forward quite a bit since then - so think twice here, particularly with the tricky three-and-a-half-point number to deal with.

Philadelphia 23 (P), WASHINGTON 14 - The head-to-head matchups just don't seem to work for the Redskins, who lack the height at wide receiver to exploit Philly's short corners and the power running game to dominate the small, soft Eagle defensive front. But Donte' Stallworth and Reggie Brown should have lots of fun lighting up the highly combustible Washington secondary.

JACKSONVILLE 21 (+2), Indianapolis 20 - The Jaguars must live right (and actually they do, their smash-mouth running game enabling them to carry on in Byron Leftwich's injury-forced absence): First they get to face the Eagles the week after Matt Bryant beat them with a 62-yard field goal, now they draw the Colts the week after they got iced on a 60-yarder!

New England 24, MIAMI 13 (+3 1/2) - Joey Harrington finally remembered last week that he is, well, Joey Harrington, and New England's lucrative form on the road this year (5-0 both ways and outscoring the opposition 156-43) simply can't be ignored.

TAMPA BAY 16 (+3), Atlanta 14 - Maybe Jon Gruden knew that Tampa Bay's all-time record the week after a shutout loss is 8-18-1 - and I gotta laugh at how Michael Vick is being hailed for having a "good game" last week when he completed half his passes. Why if Eli Manning had done that, these same people would be calling him the biggest bust since Ryan Leaf!

CINCINNATI 19, Oakland 13 (+10 1/2) - The Raiders can stop any passing game, so if you want to beat them you have to run on them - and that's something the Bengals haven't been all that good at this season, ranking 26th in the league in rushing. Take it.

Minnesota 24 (+3), DETROIT 20 - Bill Walsh once observed that Steve DeBerg always played just well enough to get his team beat. But Jon Kitna is taking that concept to a whole new level: He's playing just well enough to get himself supplanted by Brady Quinn! And don't expect any change in the pattern here as the Vikings seek their tenth consecutive victory over the Lions - and should get it despite having some pretty significant quarterback problems of their own.

Baltimore 23 (+3), KANSAS CITY 17 - When he was head coach of the Giants, Bill Parcells was once asked why his offense wasn't more imaginative, whereupon Parcells responded: "By imaginative I suppose you mean throwing the hell out of the football." It would appear that a similar lack of "imagination" explains why Baltimore is being grossly undervalued on a persistent basis - and it's happening again this week, with the Ravens field-goal underdogs to a team they lead by two games, and one that is coming off a defensive meltdown against a horrible offense led by an anonymous quarterback.

Tennessee 27 (+2 1/2), HOUSTON 14 - I hope the Texans are happy with Mario Williams when Reggie Bush has transformed the Saints into a playoff team this year and Vince Young seems poised to do the same thing for the Titans next year. The brand of Fabian socialism practiced by the Houston front office is out of date in the NFL by about 30 years.

Seattle 24, ARIZONA 10 (+3 1/2) - The Seahawks are getting back healthy again at the right time - but can they become the first Super Bowl runner-up in 13 years to reach the Final Four the following season?

SAN FRANCISCO 20, Green Bay 17 (+4 1/2) - Would you believe that Mike Nolan's father, Dick Nolan, was head coach of the 49ers the last time they covered the spread against the Packers at home? Take the points.

SAN DIEGO 31, Denver 14 (+7) - Denver's season is a train wreck thanks to Mike Shanahan's narcissism and impatience - and with the Colts showing definite signs of having peaked too early, this could be the year that Marty Schottenheimer finally sees the inside of a Super Bowl.

DALLAS 21, New Orleans 17 (+6 1/2) - This line is utterly ridiculous - especially with the Saints having won the last four meetings, including their first-ever win in Dallas last time out.

MONDAY NIGHT

Chicago 16, ST. LOUIS 13 (+6) - You want to lay wood on Rex Grossman in a noisy dome right now - and on a team that's 3-9 outright in such enclosures since 2002 no less? I know I don't.

BEST BETS: TENNESSEE, SEATTLE, SAN DIEGO

Look at the last post in each week's thread; a link to the updated standings is provided on the same page as the results for that week.

But you can also access the standings by clicking on this link.

Having recorded three second, three third and three fourth-place finishes this year, guess who can finally crack into the win column this week? A St. Louis cover would do it; a Bears cover or push makes Bran a repeat winner.

So let's see what happens - and let's see if Rex Grossman still has a starting job by the end of the night!
