It has been 20 years since a Canadian hockey team has won the Stanley Cup. There are 30 teams in the NHL. During that time there have been 6 Canadian teams and for the past few years 7 Canadian teams. Statistically that means that a Canadian team should win the Stanley Cup on average every 4 or 5 years. To not have won for 20 years is a statistical improbability bordering on a virtual impossibility. In the past 10 years the best Canadian hockey team has been the Canucks. Even with all the current complaining about the Canucks they are still the best Canadian team in the NHL. During that time the record of the other Canadian teams has been awful. The Oilers and Flames have been terrible (one playoff run excluded). Winnipeg is mediocre, same with Ottawa. Toronto has made the playoffs once in recent memory, Montreal has been decent but ultimately disappointing since 1993. So what is it? What is wrong with Canadian teams in the NHL?
