Cool Anthony's Week 12 Picks

3

Last week: 5-10-1. Season totals: 63-88-9, Pct. .422. Best Bets: 15-15-3, Pct. .500.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

THURSDAY

Green Bay 27, DETROIT 14 (+3) - Before the Packers can start worrying about Dallas, they have some unfinished business to attend to - like all but wrapping up the NFC North title with what would be their 13th win in 15 games versus the Lions.

DALLAS 24, N.Y. Jets 13 (+13 1/2) - Remember what almost happened to the Cowboys the week before their overhyped game against New England? The Jets are 0-4 on the road this year but all four losses were by less than this number.

Indianapolis 21, ATLANTA 14 (+11 1/2) - Peyton Manning's in a slump, Adam Vinatieri's in a slump, and Marvin Harrison will likely be out again here - and the Colts have what is now shaping up as a big division game next week as they host Jacksonville. No reason to lay the wood, even with the Falcons going back to Joey Harrington.

SUNDAY

N.Y. GIANTS 28, Minnesota 7 (+7 1/2) - The Giants may have silenced the skeptics with last week's win in Detroit and can't see the Vikings making much of a fight of this in the cold weather without Adrian Peterson.

New Orleans 16, CAROLINA 6 (+3) - If both David Carr and Vinny Testaverde are fully healthy as John Fox claims, then why did Fox waste no time in naming Testaverde as the starter when Carr clearly provides the Panthers with a better chance of winning? Carolina seems destined to become a redux of the 1980 Seahawks, who won their first four road games that year but lost every other game to end up 4-12.

TAMPA BAY 20, Washington 14 (+3) - The Bucs are taking full advantage of this year's much easier schedule and the Redskins may have left something on the field in Dallas.

JACKSONVILLE 21, Buffalo 17 (+7 1/2) - Jack Del Rio had better get out the mousetraps (the Jags are at suddenly vulnerable-looking Indianapolis next week) and the home team is 2-5 straight up lifetime in this one, with the Bills two for two at Alltel; take it.

CLEVELAND 31, Houston 20 (+3 1/2) - When was the last time - if ever - that every team in one division took a winning record into December? The Browns - and the weather - will make sure that doesn't happen here.

Tennessee 30. CINCINNATI 24 (+1) - The Titans have seen their defense vanish the last two weeks, but they've won five straight in the City of Satan, where Marvin Lewis appears to be staggering toward an almost certain pink slip at season's end.

Seattle 27, ST. LOUIS 20 (+3) - If the Rams were truly back, they would have scored more than 13 in San Francisco last week. The Seahawks have beaten St. Louis five times in a row and know they need a win here to stay atop the NFC West.

KANSAS CITY 16, Oakland 14 (+5) - The Chiefs won't do much in the way of running the ball with Larry Johnson still out and Priest Holmes' comeback bid now aborted for good - so the cosmic trend in this series figures to continue: Kansas City has won the last nine meetings, but the home team hasn't covered the spread in a single one of them!

ARIZONA 31, San Francisco 6 (+10) - The 49ers would be well within themselves not to score a touchdown on offense the rest of this season, and to go 2-14 after starting 2-0 - and with no first-round pick in the 2008 draft (traded to New England on draft day this past year), they could go into next summer as the overwhelming favorites to land the top pick in '09.

Denver 27 (+2), CHICAGO 21 - Did someone say "breakthrough"? Jay Cutler may have had just that Monday night - and after a one-year semi-hiatus, the Super Bowl Runner-Up Jinx is back, and brutal as ever.

SAN DIEGO 24, Baltimore 17 (+9) - If Baltimore's second-ranked run defense can bottle up the disappointing LaDainian Tomlinson, do you want the error-prone Philip Rivers throwing 40-45 times laying more than a touchdown?

NEW ENGLAND 38, Philadelphia 13 (+22) - Ironically, this could become a closer game if Donovan McNabb (sprained ankle and swollen thumb) doesn't play, because Andy Reid has a long history of calling more running plays whenever McNabb has been out, which may lead to fewer possessions for the Patriots. But in any event, don't let the largest opening spread on an NFL game in 30 years tempt you.

MONDAY NIGHT

PITTSBURGH 20, Miami 7 (+16) - Did the Steelers peak too early? And surely a Miami defense that has given up 43 points in its last three outings is worth a shot at this price.

BEST BETS: GREEN BAY, N.Y. GIANTS, ARIZONA
