Default Jeff Weaver to the Mariners

I think this is a good, albeit risky, move. He could be their #2 starter behind Felix Hernandez, or be just another arm to run out there every 5th day to get shelled. We'll see.

I don't like this signing. Weaver should have stayed in st. Louis where he could have kept winning with Duncan tutoring him.

The complete lack of decent pitching in the Majors right now is appalling. Weaver making $9 million a year? Simply insane. It's like being back in the early part of the decade when Mike Hampton signed his ridiculous 7-year $115 million deal.

It is the same amount he made last year. I had read where some team were offering him two or three year deals for slightly less per year. He probably should have taken them or elected to stay in STL. I doubt he is as bad as he was in Anaheim last year but I seriously doubt he will be anywhere close to as good as he was in September and October. I suspect he wins 10-15 games with an ERA between 4.50 and 5.00.

I think Boras ate Weavers soul... he was initially wanting the security of a multi-year deal (Boras was asking 4/40), StL offered a two year for substantially less... so he signs with Seattle for a 1yr deal.

Guess he really wanted that long term security huh? Duncan made him a good pitcher last fall... we'll see if Weaver has the guts to do it himself this time.

It's only a one-year deal, so it's a low-risk move by the M's. Not that they are going to contend anyway.
