Cool NFL Pointspread Contest: Wild Card Playoffs

Sponsored By:
Game Day Ritual
The Next Generation of Fantasy Baseball

Here are the opening lines for the Wild Card Round:

Saturday, January 8:

SEATTLE 4 over St. Louis (4:30 PM EST)
SAN DIEGO 5 over N.Y. Jets (8:00 PM EST)

Sunday, January 9:

INDIANAPOLIS 9 1/2 over Denver (1:00 PM EST)
GREEN BAY 5 1/2 over Minnesota (4:30 PM EST)

Home team in CAPS.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget to designate one of the four games listed above as a Best Bet. A correct selection on the Best Bet is worth additional points. For a complete digest of contest rules, click here.

The deadline for posting picks is the kickoff of the earliest game listed. Any unpicked game counts as an automatic loss, even if game ends in push vs. spread. If a game was left unpicked in an original post, the selection on that game may be added at any time before the kickoff of the earliest game played that week. Under no circumstances can any pick be changed (from one team to the opposing team, or changing the Best Bet from one game to another) once it has been posted.

Final regular season totals: 116-130-9, Pct. .473. Best Bets: 21-29-1, Pct. .422.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team.

SATURDAY

St. Louis 31 (+4), SEATTLE 24 - If you've heard that it's hard for one team to beat another team three times in one season, think again: Dating back to 1952, there have been 19 situations in which a team faced an opponent in the playoffs that they had beaten twice during the regular season, and the double winners won 13 of the postseason games too - and with both running back Shaun Alexander and wide receiver Koren Robinson causing discipline problems for Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren, this is hardly the spot to go against that history; and Holmgren is rumored to be in danger of being fired if he doesn't win at least one playoff game this season, so don't be surprised if he ends up taking a ride down Interstate 5 to take the now-vacant head-coaching position in San Francisco, where he once served as an assistant to the legendary Bill Walsh.

SAN DIEGO 23, N.Y. Jets 20 (+5) - If you liked the Eagles against the Bears in the divisional playoffs three years ago (as we did), chances are you'll like the Jets here too: An underdog with playoff experience taking on a favorite without any; but don't like the way the Jets got in through at least the side door if not the back door (they already knew during the overtime in St. Louis that Buffalo had lost, putting them in the playoffs) and San Diego's one serious weakness - a pass defense that ranked next-to-last in the league during the regular season - is largely negated by the fact that the Jets checked in 22nd in passing offense. Still, the been-there-before angle makes the Jets a good take with the points.

SUNDAY

INDIANAPOLIS 37, Denver 21 (+9 1/2) - Has Mike Shanahan secretly handed the head-coaching reins in Denver to Buddy Ryan or something? Their secondary has sure been talking a lot of trash all week long about how "soft" the Colts' receivers are - and that's not the only tie-in between the Broncos and Ryan, as they are one of only twelve NFL teams that have not won a playoff game in the new millennium (which includes the 1999 postseason since all of its games were actually played in January of 2000), and they also haven't exactly been a money-making machine on artificial turf of late, covering only two of six thereon in 2003-04. And Denver's big mouths make the big spread less of a worry because if those "soft" indy receivers get a chance to score a rub-it-in touchdown late in the game, you can be sure they will do it, and that might very well decide who covers.

GREEN BAY 45, Minnesota 3 (+5 1/2) - If the Vikings couldn't evade losing by double digits to a baseball player at quarterback in one cold-weather game this year and couldn't beat a last-place team missing their starting running back, one of their starting linebackers, and one of their starting cornerbacks in another, then how can you expect this game to even be close? It won't be - and don't read too much into the 34-31 final score of the November 14 game at Lambeau, as the kickoff-time temperature that day was a balmy 46 degrees; by contrast, it is expected to be 32 degrees when this one starts - and do you honestly believe that Brett Favre will lose two in a row on the tundra when the temperature at kickoff is below 35 after having won 38 of his first 39?

BEST BET: GREEN BAY
