Cool NFL Pointspread Contest: Divisional Playoffs

Sponsored By:
Game Day Ritual
The Next Generation of Fantasy Baseball

Here are the opening lines for the Divisional Playoffs:

Saturday, January 16:

PITTSBURGH 8 1/2 over N.Y. Jets (4:30 PM EST)
ATLANTA 7 over St. Louis (8:00 PM EST)

Sunday, January 17:

PHILADELPHIA 9 1/2 over Minnesota (1:00 PM EST)
NEW ENGLAND 2 1/2 over Indianapolis (4:30 PM EST)

Home team in CAPS.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget to designate one of the four games listed above as a Best Bet. A correct selection on the Best Bet is worth additional points. For a complete digest of contest rules, click here.

The deadline for posting picks is the kickoff of the earliest game listed. Any unpicked game counts as an automatic loss, even if game ends in push vs. spread. If a game was left unpicked in an original post, the selection on that game can be added at any time before the kickoff of the earliest game played that week. Under no circumstances can any pick be changed (from one team to the opposing team, or changing the Best Bet from one game to another) once it has been posted.

Last week: 3-1. Postseason totals: 3-1, Pct. .750. Best Bets: 0-1, Pct. .000.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team.

SATURDAY

PITTSBURGH 16, N.Y. Jets 3 (+8 1/2) - Ben Roethlisberger wiill try to become the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to win a playoff game after having started more than half his team's games during the regular season, but the Jets have been outscored 147-64 en route to an 0-6 lifetime record there, and with the top-ranked Steeler run defense figuring to be able to contain ageless Jet running back Curtis Martin, that means 35-40 pass attempts from Chad Pennington, who may or may not have fully recovered from a severe stomach virus by Saturday. That doesn't sound like a winning formula, and it will prove not to be one.

ATLANTA 23, St. Louis 20 (+7) - Road teams went 7-3 against the spread in "dome-on-dome" games during the just-completed regular season, and one of the losses was Atlanta's Week 16 "Siesta Bowl" defeat at New Orleans; indeed, only once otherwise in 2004 did the home team both win and cover in such a game, and that was when the Falcons beat the Rams 34-17 at the Georgia Dome in Week 2, as luck would have it - and luck did have it, as the Rams looked more like suicide bombers than mad bombers, with two stupid, costly turnovers and ten penalties. The head-to-head pairing of the fifth-ranked St. Louis aerial attack versus Atlanta's No. 22 pass defense is also quite appealing getting an even touchdown, so we look for the Falcons, who scored a mere three points more than they gave up this season despite their 11-5 final record, to win yet another close one.

SUNDAY

PHILADELPHIA 14, Minnesota 10 (+9 1/2) - The Vikings (and also the Rams, for that matter) face a very real letdown danger: Dating back to 1988 there have been 30 playoff games matching two teams from the same division, and the winners of those 30 games were 7-23 straight up and 13-17 against the spread in the next round; among the 10 underdogs who won the respective numbers are 1-9 (the lone win by the '00 Ravens) and 4-6. It's unknown at this point how close to 100 per cent Randy Moss will be, but even if he's at zero Nate Burleson and Marcus Robinson rate a massive edge over Todd Stinkston and Bust-Boy Mitchell. Can't see how the Eagles will summon enough firepower to cover this big a number, but since no sixth seed has ever reached a conference title game and no NFC team finishing with sole possession of the conference's best record has ever lost a divisional playoff game since the practice of awarding home field by record commenced in 1975, can't see them losing outright either.

NEW ENGLAND 31, Indianapolis 7 (+2 1/2) - What will be lower: The kickoff-time temperature in Gainesville, Massachusetts - or is it Foxboro, Florida - or Peyton Manning's passer rating? What the Florida Gators were to Manning in college, the New England Patriots are to Manning in the NFL: The team that closes up his throat and makes him choke! He's 0-6 lifetime at what is now called Gillette Stadium, and has served up 15 interceptions in those six games, including four there in last year's AFC championship game, in which he pulled a rating of 35.5. The year before he couldn't even penetrate the freezing mark - 31.3 - in a 41-0 loss to the Jets in a playoff game. At this writing a temperature of 26 degrees at kickoff is expected, so it should be interesting. The injuries in the New England secondary don't matter; all that matters is Peyton Manning's throat, which will be as tight as ever. Pats in a rout.

BEST BET: NEW ENGLAND
