Default How to Beat the Top Teams-- Be a Traitor!

Yo! Fans of Illinois, UNC, Wake, BC, Duke, Kansas, or any other top 25 team. I'll cut you a deal.

You tell me how to beat your teams.

If enough people respond to suit my fancy, I'll return the favor by telling you exactly how to beat my teams: UK and Marquette. (No, I don't expect you to care about Marquette, but they're still my homies.) I'll pass all useful info on to my man Tubby.

Let's see how many traitors are out there!

I'm not a "fan" of these teams, so I'm not being a traitor, but...

To beat Illinois: Kidnap Dee Brown.

UNC: Just out work 'em. I have no confidence in UNC beating another Final Four type team when they both lay it all on the line.

Wake: They've been working the ball down low a lot better now than the start of the season. If you can cut that off without sacrificing good perimeter defense, you should do alright.

BC: Same with UNC. I don't like BC in a big game.

Duke: Dunno

Kansas: Well, beating them was the IT thing a week ago, but I think that trend is passe. They should be fine in the Tournament, so, dunno.

I'm pretty sure Kansas already figured out how to beat Kentucky.

Keep the ball out of Redick's hands. Williams and Ewing are great players but Redick shoots 41% from behind the arc. I don't watch Duke much from what I have seen of them, it's Redick's three's that seem to cripple opposing teams.

Kansas can play with anyone in the nation, including Illinois. The Jayhawks only beat themselves.

To beat Duke you just need to get Williams into foul trouble without him Duke is dead in the water they have no other post presence what-so-ever. Second would be to keep the ball out of Redick's hands. He is deadly from behind the arc and if you try to get in his face he can now beat people off the dribble and is adept at drawing fouls.

UNC is easy. Just whack Felton in the knee with a lead pipe. Seriously though Felton is the key to UNC. They have pretty decent depth everywhere else except PG where the backup is Quentin Thomas who is only a freshman. Sean May, Jawad Williams, Marvin Williams, Rashad McCants, and Jackie Manuel are fairly interchangeable.

Wake's big weakness is its defense. They have trouble with teams who attack them offensively. Williams, Danelius, and Levy can be prone to silly when the ball is taken at them. Paul and Gray play good defense on the perimeter but the interior defense is weak.

Billy,

Ohio State not only beat Illinois, but came back from a double-digit halftime deficit to do so. Key stat of the second half: Zero Ohio State turnovers.

The final was pretty low scoring too, 65-64, and Illinois shot below 40% in the second half....so tight defense, take care of the ball, and use the shot clock seem to be the keys.

Of course, any time a David wants to beat Goliath, they must use up as much of the shot clock as possible and keep it artificially close that way...so it's imperative to take good care of the basketball.

If Illinois has one weakness it is in the low post. Their big guys are good but not great and a lot of pundits seem to think that if Illinois runs into a team in the tournament that can pound the ball like a UNC or a Kansas then the Illini may be in trouble. Illinois is not a strong rebounding team. Pound the low post and keep TOs to a minimum because Illinois only turns it over 10 times a game.

Illinois CANNOT win a physical game. Dee Brown has improved his outside shot, but is still somewhat inconsistant. Any team that plays them HAS to keep the ball out of Luther Head's hands. The Illinois bench is very average. The have a 7-footer off the bench in Nick Smith, but he spends more time on the perimeter than in the paint.
Once more hint: DO NOT play zone defense vs. Illinois. They will pick a zone apart. They are the most unselfish team in any bracket. They don't care who scores, as long as they end up on top.
