Yea where the hell was the pride for the Raptors and Mavs when Kobe went off? Oh wait, those teams are soft...

Great achievement for Kobe, but the big picture for the Lakers is murky. Kobe can carry this team to the playoffs by himself, but they're not getting pass the second-round solely on Kobetime.

I saw 81 points flash on the screen and it jumped out at me right away. I think any way you slice it, this is an incredible feat. Second most in NBA history, and the most in my lifetime, so it is a special moment. But as da12ken said, it was against the Raptors, one of the league's worst. Still, you think they'd throw three guys on him or something.

I don't care what team you are playing, if you score 81 points that is amazing.

and as others have pointed out, the one time someone scored more than 81 in a game, (and we all know who/how much that was), it was largely because Wilt was simply bigger than everyone else in the game.

Maybe Buckeye's right about this not being a championship formula, but yeah...unbelievable, unbelievable feat, for good or ill.

Yeah it's not a championship formula; the Lakers need a few more decent pieces around Kobe to make any kind of a run, IMO.

That was absolutly amazing last night. I mean the guy did it in a completly different way then Wilt did he didn't just over power everybody. That was the greatest display of ability by one guy that I have ever seen.

Well yeah, I agree championships are more important, and someone on a championship caliber team wouldn't even have the opportunity for 81 - you've got people to pass to. Like Doug said - who else is shooting, Devean George? Smoosh?

I'm surprised that some on here didn't blast me for my remarks. Hey, I'm not saying it wasn't impressive. Thing is, a few folks on here (like Kevin) aren't really into b-ball and they wandered in here for a pretty amazing feat.

Problem is, tomorrow this will be old news and since I am a LOS ANGELES LAKER fan, not a fan of great performances, not a fan of Kobe Bryant personally, I have to get back to reality. Those people like Kevin can leave the thread, but I have to face the following everyday:

-Kwame isn't developing.
-Medvedenko has 3 years left on his contract and is worthless.
-We have no inside size.
-Mihm would foul players on the bench if he could (for both teams!)
-Kevin Ollie is getting paid $6 million a year to do nothing.
-We have no backup point guard.
-Kobe struggles with his shooting % against any team that is in the top 10 in total defense (Pistons vs. Lakers next week...how about a win Kobe?)
-Odom's contract is too high for his worth IMO, but we don't have anyone else.

And finally, the Lakers could finish out of the playoffs for the second year in a row. That's only happened once in their history. I was watching cartoons and thought girls were "gross" the last time that happened.

Quite a performance. At least his team won the game.

Hey buckeye...you're not Steve Hartman in disguise are you?

For whatever it's worth, that was probably the greatest single player performance I'll ever see in a basketball game, and as such I'll treat it with the level of admiration and awe it deserves. I understand that some feel the need to criticize Kobe and/or the Lakers because of it, but really...does this have to be the time to bring it up? Why not just savor the moment and then let reality set back in when that 7-game roadie comes up?

el jefe,

i couldn't have said it better myself. what KB did was amazing. There will always be time to criticize and find faults with his game, his role, the Lakers, etc, etc, but the day after dude drops 81 points isn't the time.

I disagree on two points: 1) This will not be old news tomorrow, or the next day... this feat has really been the signature on what is shaping up to be an MVP season for Bryant. He was already a superstar, now the Jordan comparisons are starting to carry more weight. 2) How can a Los Angeles Laker fan also be their harshest critic? (we've been over and over this one before, I know, I just still don't get it).

Unfortunately I agree on the rest of the line item points, except I would give Mihm slightly more credit. He's far too foul-prone, but also has shown improvement and puts up decent numbers.

Huh. He's like that with Ohio State too. And the U.S. political left. He's just a nihilist.
